The Lansdowne is at aiter rx vachers, vessels returned to Portland, on Saturday lasi, having been out for a week without catch- ing a single mackerel.

The Gloucester fishing fleet have left for the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Nova Scotia. looking for mackerel. They run great risks and. there will likely be several seiz- ures.

It is understood that Chief Justice Mac- donald will be asked to stretch the rules of Court, and permit American lawyers actively to engage in the defence of the two captured vessels, as the question is one of such international importance.

Home Rule Division.

A division on the Home Rule Bill will take place to-morrow.

Mr. Chamberlain has repeated his de- mands respecting the supremacy of the Imperial Parliament. He objected to the, British hold on Ireland being on a par with the Turkish hold ou Cypress. Mr. Sexton replied that they had to choose be- tween Gladstone and Salisbury, between forced imigration and coercion of a Crom- wellian kind.

Saved by His Prayer-Book.

While a teamster named Jackson was driving near the South end of the city, on Monday night, an unknown man shot at him. The bullet went through his coat and lodged in a prayer-book in his pocket, and thus saved his life. There is no clue to the would-be assassin.
