In about a week afterwards, Rase became the bride of William Hunter, and Parker’s hopes of separating them were thus extinguished for ever.— That unhappy young man, unable to hear the weight of public odium brought upon him by this day’s trans- action, soon broke up his establish- ment in Larne, and disappeared from its vicinity. To what quarter of the world he ﬂed from the disgrace he had incurred in that pleasant town, none of its worthy inhabitants have been able to inform the writer ofthis narrative, although many ofthem, in this year of race, 1844, are yet alive who remem er the occurrence of its leading incidents.

In looking over your last number I was much pleased with your re- marks on a new Society lately form- ed in Halifax. That a similar one is needed in every town where intox- icating liquors are sold, is beyond doubt—that the bane and the antidote should go together, is also beyond doubt;—but that females should have any part of the work to perform of raising the fallen, or restoring the in- ebriate, has long been questioned.— But the day is past when females can do no ood—the small dust in the ba- lance rs not lost. The inﬂuence of that new Society is felt and acknowledged in the city of Halifax, and has found its way, like a gentle stream, to this highly favoured Isle. That such a one may be soon established in this town, is the wish of a

Snocrt or an EARTHQUAKl.—At about half past eleven on Monday morn- ing, a slight shock of an earthquake was felt upon the Mountain in this city, and, was succeeded in aquarter of an hour by one of greater violence, accompanied by a loud rumblinglike the sound ofdistant artillery or thunder, which appeared to come from the south.

The atmosphere between the two shocks was excessively heavy, and pain- fully still.

Five persons at about 200 yards dis- tance from each other at the time, des- crihe the shock as causing the earth to vibrate tremulously, and the houses to sway to and fro for about two minutes. A breeze of wind sprang up immediately after.—-Times.

IMPORTANT mom Mexico—Dates from Mexico to the 22d April have been received at New York. The news ofthe efforts of President 'I‘y- ler to annex Texas to the United States have been received at the Capital, and had created great ex- citement. The most determined hos- tility to the movement evidently ex- isted. and it was apparent that it would be resisted to the last extremi- ty. The Government Gazette says : “ Our Government is determined not to lose the usurped territory, and to that end she will use her best efforts to recover it, that the honour and dignity, and good name of the nation shall not suﬂ'er."—Newbrunwiclrer.

Gasa'r Dtrricvuries a'r Aux Cans. —By the brig Joseph Atkins, from Aux Cayes,2nd of May,we learn that the state of the town of Aux Cayes is most despe- rate. The town is occupied by the culti- vator and Montaignards, under command of Gen. Acao, who has had possession of it since the 4th of April, with a large body of cultivators—say 6,000. All mer- cantile houses are shut up, and orders given for every one of the natives to march against Aquin. Gen. Acao pro- nounced himself much opposed to the colored people. A great many arrests have been made of persons of both sexes. A great number of persons are anxious to save for Jamaica. 4‘
