Dr. TALMAGE AGAIN AN EpiTor. —Beginn- ing with Janaury Ist next, the Rev. T. De- Witt Talmage, D, D., will become one of the editors of The Ladies’ Home Jorrnal, of Phil- adelphia. ‘The famous preacher will havs a regular department each month, written by himself, with the title “Under My Study Lamp.” His first contribution wil] appear in the January number of the Journal. Dr. Talmage’s salary is said to be one of the larg- est ever paid for editorial work.

Fire at Georcetows.—The Salvation Army harracks at Gecrgetown was destroyed by fire shortly before daylight this morning. Noth- ing was saved. The cause of the fire is un- known. The building was formerly used as a market house. The wind was blowing right scross the street, in the direction of the new courthouse at the time, but that structure heing of stone with slate roof, was perfectly safe. The wise policy of thef{Government in erecting stone buildings was here exemplified. We trust that in future more buildings of brick and stone will be put up throughout the

Diep From His Ivjuries.—The Farmer says: A sad accident which resulted in death ocourredjto Mr. Patrick Deegan,of Cape Trav- erse, on Tuesday, the 4th inst. On that day he was driving homeward from Summerside and at “Moynagh’s brook,” near Ress’ corner, the horse was driven into the brook to get a drink; When done the animal suddenly sprang forward when one of the wheels went up on the bank and Mr.§Deegan was thrown out and we are informed hurt his spine. In con- sequence of this he died last Monday and was euried Tuesday. The old gentleman was wel! on in years and his age no doubt, prevented D8 recovery. We tender our sympaty to the family.

Orrawa, Nov. 19. J. D. Leary, of New York, the originator lof the Joggins raft scheme, arrived in town yesterday to interview the Minister of Cus- toms as regards arrangements for the taking out of another big raft. The Minisver being absent for two or three days Mr, Leary in- terviewed Sir John Macdonald. Another gigantic Joggins raft will leave Nova Scotia for New York early in the spring. Mr. Leary left for home last night.

Rioting Negroes. CotumsBia, N. C., Nov. 20.

Hill, who is 80 years old, remonstrated, and was fatally stabbed, One white constable was serious- ly beaten, and further serious trouble is anticipated, as the whites propose to punish the ricters at any cost.

Souris Notes.

Souris is looking forward to the winter. The fall shipping is well under way, and the foreign fishermen have nearly all left. Quite a lot of tarm produce has been ship- ped by our enterprising merchants, Mat- thew, McLean & Co., McEachern & Co., Sterns, Kickham, Capt. A. R. McDonald, and others, principally to Boston, Halifax andthe Newfoundland markets. Canned meat is being put upin large quantities just now by Matthew, McLean & Co. and D. Murphy, who has made quite an addi- tion to his already extensive factory.

In Souris improvements, Dr. Ford has enlarged his drug establishment, and Michael Lavie has built a large warehouse on Main Street.. John McKinnon, too, has finished his residence in short time. Our young folk are to have a new rink for the winter. A company was formed a short time ago to un lertake the affair, and ina short time the necessary amount of stock —about $1,000—was subscribed.

For those who desire intelligent amuse- ment we expect a number of lectures through the winter. Rev. W. W. Brewer was here from Charlottetown yesterday and gave us quite an enjoyable evening with his lecture on **The bright and happy side

of life.” Mr. Brewer promises to come again, and no doubt he will have a full house.

Next week Mr. Thomas B. Shea is to lecture on ‘The life and adventures of Thomas Manning.”” Others are expected, which we hope will be forthéoming.
