—ome Toronto clergymen objected to a parade of militia on Canada’s Thanksgiv- ing Day. Some New York clergymen ar- ranged their services for the U. 8. Thanks- giving for an hour earlier on that day sv that their congregatians could go to the great football game in time to get a good seat. Unity in doctrine does not always imply unifurmity in exposition.

—When the United States civil war was over, the pension roll contained 85.986 names, and involved aa expenditure of $8, 525,153 annually. Twenty-six years after the war, the pension roll contained 676,160 names, and called fur payments of $118,- 648,950. In the current fiscal year the pension list will amount up to $160,000,- 000, and unless congress repeals some of its recent legislation on the subject, the an- nual appropriation for pensions is expected to reach $200,000,000 within a few years. Now that a deficit in the finances has to be faced, there is a chance that the list of pen sioners wil! be considerably curtailed.

—Montreal Gaz-tte: The exports of Canada for the first four months of the fiscal year, which practically means the harvest year, amount to $53,260,000, of which $7,587,872 represents the growth in value of goods the produce of the country itself. This fact helps to account for the very large increase in the bank circulation noted in the last statement, and is an evi- dence of the swelling volume of business veing done ia Canada, compared with for- mer years. Such a growth in exports, which may be expected to continue for some time, cannot but increase also the amount of internal trade, and if competi- tion makes merchants complain that their profits are small, the people know they are getting extra value for their money. Can- ada should have « happy Christmas in 1832.

—The Buston Herald, referring to pos sible selections of Cabinet munisters by President-elect Cleveland, says that thoss of the gossips who are assigning the position of secretary of state to Senator Carlisle will will do well to remember that this isa a position which none but rich men can very well afford to hold nowadays. That office, as it has been filled for several years, involves a personal expenditure of abou, $25,000 a year in the way of entertainment and vther incidental outlays. None of tht Cabinet cffices leave much margin for those who hold them in a liberal spirit in the wae of salaries, but the secretaryship of state iy a heavy drain upon the purse of its incums bent. These remarks are equally applicable- to Cabinet positions in Canada, The min- ister at Ottawa who entertains even in a modest way finds his salary altogether inadequate to the demands upon his purss demands, moreover, which caunot well be ignored. It is understood that when Mr. W. OC. Whitney held the position of secre- tary of the navy in the Cleveland adminis- tration, his expenditure exceeded $100,000 annually, largely for purposes of entertain- ment.

—The Manitoba Free Press is a paper not particularly friendly to the Dominion Government. Its trade policy is favorable to the revenue tariff. But it contends that the Conservative party is deserving of the support of the North-west. It affirms that the Liberal leaders never lose an oppor- tunity in parliament to show their hostility io that part of the Dominion. They oppose every aeasure or proposition intended to assist its development, and endeavor to excite such prejudice as they can by dwell- ing on what they are pleased to consider the enormous cost it has been to the Dominion. ‘From Liberals,” says the Free Press, ** it has been all kicks and no ha’ pence; we may dispute as we will about the ha’ pence, but from the Conservatives we have at least re ceived no kicks.” ‘To the Conservatives it is due that the country is opened up at all, and to them especially, and the bold policy of their great statesman, that it wis put in com. munication with Eastern Canada. As for im- migration, it has been slower than was hoped for; but years are required to overcome anciert prejudices against the climate of the country, and to minimise the a aren reput. ation of the western states. owever, the Conservaiive policy is not one of sloth or indifference, and the time is at hand when even the Free Press will give more than a grudgiog acknowledgment of ite merits,

Henry Clews writes from New York : “The unsettled feeling left by the election is assuming more definite shape, and the indica- tions at the moment are that, whatever may be the ‘ater effects of the new commercial pul- icy, there is no general disposition to attach extreme importance to this factor as an ele- ment of current speculation. The course of industrial stocks for the last ten days illus» trates this view. The first feeling after the election was a very reasonable one that this class of secarities must suffer under a change of tariff with especial severity; and, in conse- quence, they were sold very freely and their prices declined. It now turns out that, when the sellers of the industrials went to cover their sales, they had to pay a sharp advance to get the stock; which implies, as yet, the point bas not been reached at which the prin- cipal holdersareanxiousto get rid of their hold- ings. This doea not mean that holders are entirely indifferent about the bearing of our new industrial policy on investments; it mere iy implies that, at present, the situation is 80 complicated that no clear opinion can be formed as §to how the change will work or when its effects will appear in matured shape The more the subject is considered the more it is seen that the change will bring advan- tages as well as disadvantages, and as eighteen months or two years must elapse before any new tariff law can take effect, there is a growing disposition to let this factor await for maturer development, to be watched and weighed during the interval, but not to be reckoned as an extreme influence in current speculation.

False Reports.

Str,—I notice in your last issue ‘‘Dundas Notes,” in which the writer states that Tue EXAMINER is keenly looked for every Satur- day, owing to the fact that it contains the most reliable newa, both loca] and foreign. 1 wish to tell you that this fictitious author is no friend of Tot Examiner. His notes from beginning to end are false, with the exception of reference to Rev Mr. Goodwill and the state of oar roads, which are in much the same con- dition as in other parts of the Island, where this wonderful papedistcibuting piece of me- chanism known as the Government, money- saving road machine has done execution. How such an unbiassed opinion in reference to the roads should be the outcome of amind so degraded and polluted. I fail to discover. He quotes consistency as a jewel, puffs up THe EXAMINER as a reliable paper, and attempts at the eame time{to flood its columns with the basest fabrications and most infamously false statements which his vile, fiendish and disordered imagination is capable He speaks about the firm of Newbery & Morrison, en larging their business, with Edmund Clay as their tureman. Now, no such firm is in ex- istence in this vicinity, neither is there such a firm as Currie & Uo. Mr. John Acorn is buying up beef for canning, and this whitr- washed Yankee wit-cracker muet make a dis- play of bis humor when he sesserts that Currie & Co. are canning rabe bits. What a noble vocation is his! Whata high calling! Were the Am- ericans not slow to recognize worth and latent (if any) ability, no doubt this community would have cause to regret the loss of its local celebrity in the person of this wonderful

Sap Svuicipe.--Hamilton Gabie, a pros- perous farmer of Alywin Township, Ottawa county, committed suicide by hanging him. self a few days ago. The deceased was the father of afamily and highly respected. His brother, a student for the Methodist ministry, suicided some years ago by shoot- ing himself. The action in his case was also put downto insanity, as no other causes sufficient to account for such an act could be discovered.
