We Want Your Doodles

If you give a human a writing implement, a writing surface and enough time, more often than not, said human will create something: a doo- dle. doodle -n. a drawing or mark made absent mindedly. Needless to say, with its abundance of paper, writ- ing implements, and absent minds, university is a hotbed of doodle activi- ty. Everyday thousands of students at UPEI sit down in uncomfortable chair/desks (which we will call chesks for the sake of convenience) for any- where from forty-five minutes to three hours. This entire time is usually spent with pen or pencil in hand as we attempt to write down our professors' lecture verbatim.

As good as our professors are here at UPEI, they cannot be expected to always keep our attention captured for the allotted time. If you sit in a chesk listening to one person talk about one subject for long enough, your mind will invariably wonder. That's what minds do, and it's pointless to fight it. So what do you do at times like this? You can take an unnecessary bathroom break. If you're a huge jerk lucky enough to be sitting next to another huge jerk, you can carry on a conversation in the middle of class, thereby revealing your mutual jerki- ness to all. But what most of us do is doodle.

I'm not sure, but I think every- one probably doodles from time to time. They doodle on napkins, Styrofoam cups, phone books, and even on chesks. But what I am inter- ested in are margin doodles. The doo- dles which fill up the unused space in the notes which we take everyday. Whoever designed looseleaf paper knew what they were doing. That one inch of space on the side and top of our sheets is the perfect amount of room to let our pens and minds wander together.

I save my notes for every class I take at UPEI, and one of the reasons

for that is that I want to save my mar- gin doodles. It is my hope that there are others out there in the university community who also save and cherish there margin doodles. It is with this hope in mind that I and a small com- mittee have decided to put on an exhibit of UPEI student doodles called Margins. Professors can also submit: doodles.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Margins will not work unless we got lots of submissions. We are not looking for anything specific. The doo- dles can be large and elaborate or small and insignificant. They can be words, poetry, or stream of conscious- ness rambles. Our philosophy is, if you took the time to put it in your margin, it is of value, and should be displayed in this exhibit. The only criterion is that it was created while you were in class at UPEI. So go through your notes this semester, or from semesters past, and find your favourite doodles. You can submit as many as you like.

The exhibit will be early next semester in the main corridor of the Student Centre, likely in February. Unfortunately there will only be two drop off points for submissions. However, these locations will be secure and ensure the safety of your valuable notes and doodles. One sub- mission box will be located outside of the history lounge on the third floor of Main Building. This is right next to David Weale's office, room 302. The other submissions box will be in the Cadre office located on the 2nd floor | of the Student Centre. Please leave your name and contact information with the doodle so it can be properly displayed and then returned after the exhibit is over. Other fun information would be what class the doodle was created in and when (professors might especially enjoy this information).
