UPEI Student Union and UPEI Alumni Association Student Leadership Bursaries

Background

The UPEI Alumni Association and the UPEI Student Union have joined together to establish annual $600 awards for UPEI students who, through demonstrated leadership and volunteerism, have contributed to the betterment of University life and are committed to enhancing student experiences at UPEI. The award funds are raised at the Annual Friends of UPEI Winter Banquet.

Terms

Awards of $600 will be awarded to full-time returning students, in good academic standing who demonstrate leadership in university life including, but not limited to, University clubs, Student Union, residence assistants, athletics, tutoring, peer support or other activities. Financial need is a more important consideration than academic results. The number of awards given will be determined by the amount raised. Recipients may be granted the award in more than one year. :

Nomination and Application Guidelines

4 A person can be nominated by at least two other members of the UPEI community, including a brief statement about why the student deserves the bursary. It would include reasons why the nominee, through leadership and volunteering, demonstrated dedication to the betterment of University life and a commitment to enhancing the student experiences at UPEI, deserves the bursary. The nominee should be advised by the nominators that his or her name is being put forward, and submit a confidential statement of financial commitments and resources (Registrar’s Office Scholarship and Bursary Application Form) before the deadline.

re Students can apply with a brief essay, no more than one page, outlining their leadership and volunteer experiences as well as a resume, including two on-campus references whom the selection committee may contact. Students must also complete the Registrar’s Office Scholarship and Bursary Application Form, including the statement of financial commitments and resoutces.

Selection

The recipients will be recommended by a special committee of the UPEI Student Union and the UPEI Alumni Association, to the Chair of the UPEI Admissions, Degree and Scholarship Committee for confirmation. The bursaries will be deposited to the student’s UPEI account on the last day of April each year.

Funding The UPEI Alumni Association and the UPEI Student Union will contribute

the funds, no later than March of each year.

Year of Triumph for

Environmental Society

It has been a big year at UPEI —a year full of surprises and controversy. But also, for at least one UPEI society, it has been a year of huge success and phenomenal growth. The UPEI Environmental Society, established in 2001 as an Environmental Studies project, has made giant strides since September.

What was a little over a year ago only a small club with five members is now an official society with forty-some members and a growing list of environmental success stories.

“We are one of the most active societies on campus now,” says Chua Soon Cherng, a long-time member of the society, who hopes this trend will continue.

Adding to the list of this year’s successes, which includes fundraising events, a booth at the Energy Awareness Fair, campus clean-ups, pressuring Chartwells to come up with environmentally-friendly alternatives to the way they run their cafeterias (e.g, glass sugar dispensers, fair trade coffee), and the incredible success of the Inkredible ink cartridge recycling program, there is now the exciting news that UPEI has won the bid host this year’s Sierra Youth Coalition Conference. This event, in which people from across Canada and the US. will come here to discuss sustainable university living, will be held during the last week of September in 2007.

“(The society] is still pretty new,” says Chua. “We’re still just learning, exploring. And we’re always looking for more members, people willing to take leadership for projects. We’re here to help them do whatever

they want to do.”

The society is also Gola for volunteers to help out with upcoming events such as SYC Conference and the bi-yearly campus clean-up.

“We're going to need lots of volunteers at the conference,” Chua says. “We need people for cooking, billeting, driving vans, and all kinds of stuff.”

And of course there will also be a need for volunteers with the campus clean-up — an event with fun to be had and prizes to be won, that encourages people to think before they litter and results in a cleaner campus for everyone. The clean-up crew will meet on the 30th of March at the Student Centre, and lend a hand between the hours of 3-4 PM. So, come and meet all the environmentally conscious people at UPEI!
