FATE OF PARTIES UNDER JACQUES, BIA AND JOUBERT

The Reforme, of Berlin, publishes a pri- vate letter, dated October 21, from Boma, the capital of the Congo Free State, on the iower Cong», saying that official confirma- tion has been received there of the reported massicre of the expeditions under Capts. Jacques, Joubert and Bia. The Mouve- ment Anti Ex lavagiste published a despatch from Caspr, Jacques, dated Albertville (Tanganyika), August 27. Jt asked for re-enforcemeuts, and added: *'The post is attacked by Arabs. They have erected a fort facing Albertville. In concert with Joubert we have fruitlessly endeavored te drive them off. Send _ re-enforcements quickly or eur position will be untenable.” The committee of the Brussels anti- slavery society, moved by this appeal, issued a manifesto and opened a subscrip- tion for a relief expedition. Capts. Jacques and Joubert were agents of the Brussels anti-slavery society. Within the past two years they have built a number of military posts along the coasts of Lake Tanganyika, for the purpose of stopping the slave troffic in that regiou. They sent armed parties out from these stations to interfere with the cperations of Arab slaying expedi- tions, and released and cared fora large numberof slaves. Lastspring the Arabs took

ander the command of Rumaligza, the most powerful slave dealer in that region. The Arab force was so large that the little bands of the anti-slavery army were com- pelled to act wholly upon the detensive. There was great danger that their supplies of ammunition would give out before they were rep'enisbhed. About midsummer a fresh supply arrived, and it was hoped that the anti«slavery forces would be able to defeat the beseigiog Arabs. This was the last reliable news heard from the party until Capt. Jacques’ despatch of Aug. 27, asking for re- enforcements, was received, Ever since Sep- tember, however, the most alarming rumors with regard to the situation of the Europeans on Lake Tanganyika have been circulating from Staniey Falls. it was reported that all the men in the Joubert and Jacques parties had been massacred and the Bia expedition had met the same fate. Nobody here seems to know why the Bia expedition should nave come into contact with hostile Arabs, as the expedition, at last accounts, was in Garen- ganze, in the southern part of Congo state. Lhe leiter referred to above, however, says that the reported massacre of those three parties has been officially confirmed. It was the Arab chiefs, Muene Mohara and Nserera, who headed the revolt which resulted in the massacre of the Holdister expedition in May last. Farther east, Ramaliza, on Cake Tan- ganyika, is ‘warring upon the whites. Stiil further east, at Tabora, the Germans are in ‘rouble with her slave dealers. At last ac- couuts Sultan Sikki, the most powerful chief in the neighborhood of Tabora, had taken up arms against the Germans, and had fortified himself with 809 men a little outside of Tae bora. The Germans reported that they were not in sufficiently strong force to take the offensive. They were hard at work convert- ing the station at Tabora into a fortress, and expected to remain on the defensive until re enforcements reached them from the coast. The Arab slave dealers all along the line seem to be making a concerted effort to maintain by force of arms their alleged right to carry on the nefarious traffic. se

Porators.—There has been very little change in the condition of the market dur- ing the past week. Domestic receipts have been light, and choice stock is firm, but de- mand not very active. Chenangoes have been aelling fairly and close firmer, some of the best lots at 68 cents.

Eces —There has been n> material change during the past week. [Receipts are moderate, aud fancy fresh are in light supply, but there is plenty,of al! other grades. Prices remain about the same. There is a wide range cn fresh goods ac- cording to quality. Held stock is quiet and fairly steady. Limed in steady de- mand, but have to be extra to exceed 20c.

There was a sudden interruption to the marriage of Heary Langshank and Miss Mary Brillhart at Williamsport, Md., on Wednesday night.
