Value of Weather Forecasts.

The great commercial value of the weather forecasts can be shown by specific instances. During each of the severe tropical storms of last Septem. ber and October more than 1,000 ves- sels in the first class and more than 1,200 in the second were detained ir port on account of the predictions of the bureau, the value of vessels and eargoes thus sheltered amounting tc more than $30,000,000. Of 250 vessels in New York bay, when notice was given of the September storms, only two ventured to disregard the signals, ‘me of these put back after reaching Sandy Hook; the other kept on, and arrived in port five days overdue, in a badly crippled condition, her main- mast carried away and two seamen washed from her deck.
