WHY MR. CAMPBELL WAS ELECTED.

Sirn,—Some of the peity office holders and slavieh supporters of the Libera! party are greatly chagrined over the elec- tion of Hon. Wm. Oampbel! in the First District of Queen’s, and are putting for- ward all kiods of silly excuses and absurd reasons for Dr. Robertson’s defeat. One ot these gentlemen (?) who signs himself Norman, has actually rushed into print and gives vent to his pent-up feelings in the Patriot of the Sih inst. Just listen to what Norman says:

“This was his (Mr. Campbell’s) canvass ‘It makes no difference at change the Gog- You may as well give me your support. Well, if you can’t support me, at least stay at home,’ aud Norman adds ‘many being Lusy at the barvest thought it made no diff-reuce and stayed at home.”

It is weil known to every elec~ tor in the First District, that at eve y meeting during the campaign, Mr. Camp~ bell vigorously denounced the Government for its broken promises, its corrupt and extravagant expenditures, its annual deficits and enormous increase of tle public debt, as well as for it barefaced beodling and jobbery. Nor did he forget to tell the people, if thev elected him that he would do all | in his power to. overthrow the | moet corrupt and extravagrant govern~ ment that ever ruled the destinies of this Province. Where was “Norman” that be did not hear. Truly there are nove so deaf as those who have ears to hear and will not hear. “Norman” beinga good Libe- ral, I presume, reads the Guardian, Patriot and Pioneer. Now, what action did these journals take during the campaign and what did they advise their Liberal friends todo? Did not the Christian, independent, Guardian open the bal] with a@ bitter per- sonal attack on Mr. Campbe!l in the hope of lessening his chances of election? Did not the Patriot tellits Liberal friends that “the contest was a political one and pot a question of farmers or doctors.” Did it not tell them that Dr Robertson “stood for the same political principles as did Hon. Mr. Warburton and does Hon. Mr. Sinc- lair?” Did it not call upon all good Liberals to rally around the Government candidate and return the doctor with a handsome majority to help galvanize into life Premier Farquharson’s Goy- ernment. The Pioneer, in ite cracked voice, piped the same tune and al] three journals predicted a glorious victory for the Gov- eromenton the 3lat of August. Surely “Norman” does not mean to insinuate that the Liberals of the First District have los: al] faith in the oracles of their party. A gaio, if the Liberal’s looked upon Mr. Camp bell’s election as unimportant, will “Nor- mao tell ue what brought Premier Farqu- barson, Attorney General McDonald, aod Mr. John H. Bell into the District to op pose him. Whatdid the Atiorney Gener- al say about the issue? What did Premier Farquharson tell the people at the meet~- inge and in his house to house canvass, and what did Mr. Jobn H. Bell tell the electors on the platform and in his meanderings through the. District. Simply tbis, “Mr Campbell is a determined opponent of the Literal party; if elected he will wage con- tinual war upon them, and it would be nothing short of a Liberal calamity to elect such a formidable opponent to oppose the Government in its present weak and unfeebled condition.” This was the burden of the bril- / liant trio’s song, and they did all in their power and used every means in their power to defeat Mr. Campbel!. Mr. Bell went so far as to thresten thedistrict with the wrath and vengeance of Sir Lous Davies if they voted for Mr. Campbell. He said Mr. Campbell was a lifelong opjonent of Sir Louie, and he would be morally offended if the ist District elected Mr. Campbell to oppose the Farqubareon Government. He feared tbat Sir Louis would eulk and be so indignant that he would not allow the Dominion Govern- ment to pay the Island one cent of that million dollars that they dangled before the eyes of the people at the last electies. Now, according to Norman's showing, the Liberals of the lst District disreg.rded the advice of the Guardian, Patriot and Pioneer, laughed at the urgent and frantic appeals of Attorney General McDonald, Premier Farquharson and Mr. Joho H Bell, and were not the least awed by the threatened vengeance of Sir Louis, but listened with a willing ear to Mr. Camps bell and quietly stayed at home at his bidd ng. What a wonder’u) man Mr. Camp- bell must be, evea in Norman’s eyes, and what a worderful influence he must have over the liberal voters, On the other hand what a compliment “Norman” pays to the ability of the Attorney General, Premier Farquharson and Mr. John H. Bell io the lst District of Queen’s. Well may ‘hese three snubbed and belittled g ntlemen exclaim, ** O save us from gach friends as Norman.” If Norman wishes to know why sO many liberals “stayed at home” he may fiind some of the reasons in the letter signed “Liberal” in the Guardian of the 8th inst. But if he is anxious to know the real cause of the change in the district, I will tell him: It was the unfa!s filed promises and broken pledges of the government, their repeated deficits and enormous increase of the public debt,

But it is not the practice of Conservatives to exultover a fallen foe. They bave too much respect for Dr. Robertson 1o exult over his defeat. It was not Dr. Robertson they were fighting, but a corrupt extrava-

But, to be serious, men of the Norman type are very little support to avy cause, and their silly scribblings in the cewepapers only call the attention of tbe public to the weakness of their party. Therefore 1 would advise Norman’s friends to look after him avd restrain him from again rushing into print and making a,fool of himself. Io his ravings he makes some incoherent remarks sbout poetry. Well, if he isa lover of poetry I would recommend him to read anu ponder over the lines:

“O wad some power the giftie gie us To see ourselves as others see us; It wad frae monie a bluoder free us and fvolish notion.”

Norman inginuates that he is anxious to unbosom bimself in the Patr ot, Well, if it i8 potriety he is looking for, some person may take the trouble to unmask him and strip bim of the bypocritical cloak which apparently has weighed very ‘heavily on his sbouldera of late. In the meantime, as the Premier is said to be an out and out reformer, | would respectfully suggest that he begin with Norman, It might mend his manners a little if Premier Farquharson would lay him across bis par~ ental knee and administer a good sound ~pauking which he richly deserves. Good- bye Norman mind your p’s and q’s for! uoderatand the Premier has a rod in pickle for you.
