St. Jouy, October 6.—The Church of England «yuod at Fredericton today passed a rcsolution regretting an increase of cor- ruption in elections and calling upon the church and clergy to do all possible to suppress the evil. The, resolution was introduced by Dean Partridge, and some- what modified at the request of Sheriff Sturdee and Judge Hanington. A sbarp discussion took placa over tne motion of Rev. J. Desoyres, asking the synod not to coutinue the recognition of church schools outside the province. Suerprooxe, Oct. 6—A man was killed and eaten by bears near Black Lake, Megantic, recently, according to a corres- pondent of the Sherbrooke Record. He says that two men had been peeling bark in the woods. One of them went further back in search of another tree. His com- panion heard him calling a little later, but thought nothing of it for some time. Lat: r when the man did not return, he weat in search of him, and his surprise and horror may be imagined when he suddenly came upon two large bears leisurely eating the body of his unfortunate companion, and just finishing their meal, having devoured it as far as the boot legs. The horrified woodsman turned and fled, an4 later when returned with assistance the bears had departed, leaving only torn clothing aad crushed bones to testify to iheir savage and bloody work.

The later pews say that Cavendish,who is a nephew 6f the Duke of Devonshire, and Lientenant Andrew, his companion, arrived at ‘Ki-~ kuika on Augu ‘t Sth, after a trip around Lake Rudolph, which up tothat time had not heen explored. Cavendish and Andrew had a trying time. Their head man_ in- cited the Accaris to mutiny, aod the two Englishmen were forced to yield to their demands. But near Kikaika, Cavendish and Andrew seized the two ringleaders, who have since been sent to the coast for trial. The expedition discovered a new lake, and two active volcanoes, and crossed tromthe Gulf of Aden to the Zanzibar coast by much the same route as that previously foll wed by Dr. Donaldaon Smith, of Philadelphia.
