Mr. Laurier has a clean! record; Mr. Mercier’s is rotten. That is. alltrue. A Rich Little Isle.
AN ISOLATED spoT iN’ THE PACIFIC OCEAN EXPECTED TO PROVB A BONANZA FOR ITS OWNER.
Few are aware that away offin the Pacific ocean is an island on which flies the Stars and Stripes, and which is absolutely owned by an American; yet such is the case. The little spot which is marked on the charts as no ‘arger than the point of a pin, is in latitude 24 degrees north, longitude 54 degrees east, and is known as Marcuse Island. Capt. A. Rose- bill, a citizen of the United States, is the possessor of this not very extensive domain, which is only three miles long by almost iwo miles wide, and at its highest point is not more than 60 feet above the waters of the vast ocean that surrounds it. At the present time the little island cannot boast of an inhabitant, but in a short time several dozen sou!s will take up their residence on it. The island is covered from end to end with a vast deposit of guano of unknown depth, and Capt Rose hill, who is now in San Francisco, is making preparations to work the deposit. Samples of the guano show it to be of the highest com- mercial value, and it is expected to prove a bonanza to the owner.

The British government has taken this step on account ot the refusal of the Chinese authorities to furnish an explanation of the Chinese officer in hauling down the flag of Admiral Lang while the British officer was in command of the Chinese north coast squadron at Hong Kong in 1890. Admiral Lang resigned his commission in the Chiawse awy in June 1890 giving as his reason for resigning that the Chinse officers of the squadron were insubordinate.
