“Do yon know,” said Mr. Bowser the other evenins as he looked over to Mrs. Bowser, ‘that the auniversary of our wed ding comes around pretty soon?’

“Yes, dear,” was the reply.

“Next week Wednesday we shall have been married twelve years.”

“Yes, twelve years,”

“Some men forget those things,” con- tinned Mr. Bowser as he melted a little more, ‘‘but I neverdo, I want to buy you a gift of some sort, but as L couldn't think of just the thing I thought I’d ask you about it, What shall it be!”

“Ob, but you are so kind, Mr. Bowser. As to the gift, I'm sure you will get some- thing to please me.”

“I want to, of course, but I've been wondering if you wouldn’t as soon accept $50 in cash, You can then bny what pleases you best,”

“You dear, good man!”

“Well, I want to de what is right, and I wantto make you happy. ‘here's too much neglect on the part of Lusbands, [I know men who never seem to think of their wives,”

“Yes, there are plenty such.”

“Ab, but that wasa happy day when we stood at the altar!” exciaimed Mr Bow- ser after # momeut’s reflection, ‘You looked like an angel that d.y, but no haudsomer than you have every day since.

“Thank you, dear. You are so good,” replied the blushing Mrs. Bowser,

“I think we have had as much happiness as most of them, don’t you?”

**Indeed I do,”

‘There was nothing mercenary about our marriage. It was love at first sight and love all the way through. I don’t remem- ber that we ever had a lovers’ quarrel.”

‘Justa little one, I believe,” she replied, though she regretted her blunder an in- stant later.

‘What was that about?”

““Why—why—about Tom—Tow—~”

“Oh, yes! That fool of a Tom Brown was hanging around rou, and I of course objected. I remember now. The night we made up Tasked you to be imy wife. Do you remember where we were?”

“Yes, dear, We sat on the veranda in the moonlight. Not a word had been said for a long time when you suddenly knelt at my feet and poured forth your impas- sioned declaration of love.”

“What? What's that?” exclaimed Mr. Bowser as he rose up, ‘I knelt at your feet!”

‘Yes, dear, just as the chevaliers of o!d knelt”

‘“‘Never, Mrs.

Bowser! The chevaliers of old be hanged. I remember how it was as plain asday. There were fifteen mighty good-looking girls camped on imy trail and only that noodlehead of a Tom Brown spooning around you. I had -hurt your feelings, and in making up with you I said something about marriage. You jumped at it like a wolf for a bone.”

“Why, Mr. Bowser!”

‘Yes, had me fast before I realized {t. The idea of my getting dowa on my knees and acting like a fool!”

“But don’t you remember that you said you'd commit suicide if I didn’t marry

you?” “What? Are you talking to me, Mrs. Bowser? I get down on my knees and

pour forth and so forth and talk about sui- cide! Woman, are you crazy?”

Mrs. Bowser ought to have been politic enough to remember that it was Tom Brown who did the kneeling and the pour- ing. but she felt nettled and replied:

“Yes, you threatened to take poison that very night, and father found ons of your boot heels on the verandah next morning!”

“One of my boot heels! I kicked off one of my boot heels as I poured forth, did I?”

‘Well, dear, we loved each other, and of course we bad a little quarrel, and of course I was proud to have you kneel to me. Mother heard your impassioned appeal from her window, and she—”

“‘My impassioned bosh! I threaten to commit suicide! Mrs. Bowser, next Wed- nesday we shall have been married twelve years |”

“Yes, dear.”

“‘Aud they have been years of misery to me!’

“But you said—”

“And you get no present!”

‘But you—”

“And I see now why it doesn’t do fora husband to be kind and loving to his wife!”

“My dear, will you let me speak?”

“And it wasn’t a happy day when we stood at the altar!” he suouted.

‘‘But, dear—"’

“There was no love at first sight, and you never looked like an angel!”

This time Mrs. Bowser held her peace, but after he had tramped around fora moment he continued :

*‘Impassioned appeal! Pouring forth my love! Kicking off the heel of my boot as I threatened to commit suicide!”

Mrs. Bowser was still silent, wa

“IT may be engaged in the library all night getting the papers ready tor our respective lawyers to look over, but I shail see our child in the morning, Wo- man, good night!”

Mrs. Bowser went to bed and to sleep. At midnight the clang of the fire bells awoke her, and she found Mr, Bowser snoring contentedly in his accustomed place. —M. Quad in St. Lonis Republic.

‘Besides the well-known uses to which India ink has been put by the civilized people of t'e world,” said Professor Leyi H. Hawkins, of New York, last night,

He said it was India ink, di- luted to acertain invariable consistency, and from his long enstom of noting the ac- tion produced upon it by the atmospheric conditions, he was able to predict the weather with a good deal of accuracy. The Discovery of Glass—Other Equa.., Interesting Paragraphs.

There is little or nothing known wit! certainty in regard to the invention o discovery of glase. Some of the elles specimens are Egyptian, and the age certain glass vessels made by that people which are now kept in the British Maseuim ie believed to be at Jeast 4194 years, dacing back to the year 2300 B.C. Tra sparent glass was first used about 750 B.C. : th eredit of this latter discovery being yive to the Pheenicians. The old story of its accidental discovery is familiar. Mer chants who were resting their cooking pots on blocks of subcarbonate of soda found glass produced by the union, under het of the alkali and the sands of the desert

Tomb of the Builder of Babel's Tower.

In the year 5538 A. D., while workmen were engaged in trenching in Prussia, they unearthed a triangula: building in which was a column of white marble, At the side of the column was tomb of freestone and over it aslabot agate, inscribed with these words, whic! were in Latin: ‘‘Here Rests the Ashes of Peleg, Grand Architect of the Tower o Babel. Vegetable Ivory. The vegetable ivory of commerce is an

albuminous substance formed from milky fluid in the fruit of a species of palm indigenous to several parts of

Central and South America, but which seems to flourish best in New Grenada and Peru. It corresponds to the meat of the cocoanut, which latter is the fruit of another species of palm. When vegetable ivory nuts are ripe they are covered with a brown ekin, are bean-shaped, the interior being perfectly white and very hard,

A Delicate Mechanical Feat.

E. A. Williams. a watchmaker, of Broad- way, New York city, recently accomplished a remarkable mechanical feat—that of drilling a hole throngh the eutire length ot a common pin, from head to point, the opening being just large enough to admit of the passage of afinehair. Mr. Williams is the mechanie who two years ago cuta sewing needle in two lengthwise and then drilled holes and fastened it together so nicely that the split could not be seen with the naked eye.

Divide the number expressing the year by four (4), taking no notice of the re mainder. Next find the number of day: inclusive from the Ist of Jannary to tt date in hand, reckoning February alway> as having only 28 days. Add together tie sum, the quotient and the first nun:ber: and divide this by seven (7).
