Opening lead—five of hearts. Here is a situation in which many declarers fall to get the most out of their cards.

South was in six spades and West led a heart. Declarer won with the ace. drew two rounds of trumps. cashed the ace of clubs. ruffed the q u e e n of hearts. and thenJed a club and finessed the nine. East took the queen. returned a diamond. and South went down one.

You might say the result was unlucky -— since West might

have had the queen of clubs in- stead of East — and we wouldn‘t quarrel with that statement. However. we don‘t think South played the hand in the most ap- proved fashion.

The point is that South. in effect.’ staked his all on West's having the queen of clubs. which was only about a 50-50 proposi- tion. He could have increased his chances considerably playing differently.

Suppose he. had entered dum- my with a trump at trick two and then played a low diamond. How many players with East's hand. s e e in 2 only dummy. would put. up the king at this point? Very few, would be our guess. And if they didn't. South Would make the hand without much trouble. _

The jack would force the ace and declarer Would later be able to capture East's king of dia- monds and thus establish a dis- mond trick in dummy. This. in turn. would allow South to dlsn pose of his club loser.
