Parnrut Accrpent.—We learn from the Pioneer that Mr. James Carruthers, of North Bedeque, met with a very painful accident last Friday afternoon. It appears that he was loading potatoes from the cellar of his house into a cart with a horse and block and tackle, when the middle finger of his right hand got caught in the block and the first Sjoint was pulled off. Dr. Warruthers dressed the wound.

‘‘Lignt ry THE DargkNess.”—Mre. E. H. Norton sang a beautiful and touching solo at the service in Zion Church last evening. It was entitled, “‘Light in the Dark ness,” and was, we understand, composed by a Mr. McKinlay who died at North River a few years ago. It was set to music by Fred- erick Cowan, a celebrated English musician, and was first sung by Madame Stirling. Mrs. Norton’s rendition of the beautiful lines is iighly spoken of.

Insurance Rates.—We understand that a neeting of prominent merchants was held in this city this forenoon, to consider how far the Board of Insurance Underwriters have acted in accordance with their promises given some four or five years ago, in view of the in- troduction of water. The concensus of opinion appeared to be that they had not carried out their promises in reference tothe amount of reduction and the time it should be made. A committee of five was appointed to confer with the Underwriters to see if a satisfactory ar- rangement could not be made.

One Tuovsayp Men Wantev.—Mr. Don- kin, the engineer in charge of the Cape Breton railway,{complains of a scarcity of men and teams. He informsthe North Sydney Jerald that 1,000 men are wanted on the road be- tween Boisdale, Sydney and North Sydney, as well as a large number of teams. The de- partment is anxious to have the road finished by autumn. Mr. Donkin is in hopes, how- ever, that all the labor and teams necessary for the vigorous carrying on of the work will be available next month, as farmers will then have completed the putting in of their crops.

An Istanpgr Kitiep-—Edward Owen, son of Mr. John Owen, of Malpeque, we are pained to relate, met with an accident out trom Portland, Me., on Wednesday, the 8th inst., which caused his death. The deceased became paralyzed a few years ago and, although he recovered, was always afterwards weak from its effects. He was on @ visit home last fall, but returned to the States before winter set in. On the day he met his death he was going on the train and had crossed the track, But fell just as he was over, and the train rushing by struck him on the head. He only lived about two and a half nours after the acci-
dent. Deceased was married to a daughter of Mr. Benjamin Cole, of Centreville. We sympathise with the friends in their grief. — wneer,

Railway Accident.
BELLEVILLE, Ont., May 19.
What came very near being a very grave accident took place at 9 o'clock this morn- ing near here on the Belleville and Peter- boro section of the Grand Trunk. A pas- senger train standing on the main line was run into by a heavy timber train and the 17 passengers more or less injured, although it is not thought fatally in anv case.

Rome, May 19. Upon inquiry at the Vatican on Saturday, it was learned that the report that the Pope had been taken suddenly ill was not well founded. It is stated that His Holiness is in good health.
