“Jailbreaking”

If you’re still reading this, you have decided to boldly go where many have gone before (Hur- rah!). You are ready to free your iPhone from the clutches of Apple and unleash its true power. This article will guide you in your new mission and help you explore new iPhone functions and features. But remember, with great power comes great responsibility.

Jailbreaking an iPhone is a simple and harm- less process, provided you don’t screw it up. Even if you do mess up, you can restore your iPhone to factory settings and be up and run- ning again in a few minutes. Jailbreaking is very different from unlocking your iPhone to work with other carriers. This article does not support unlocking an iPhone, and you could potentially damage your phone if you try to unlock it. Jail-

In order to jailbreak your iPhone, you need to have iPhone software 3.0.1 installed on your phone, as there is currently no jailbreak for the new 3.1 software. If you already have 3.0.1, fol- low these steps to jailbreak your phone.

First you will have to download redsnOw (the software that jailbreaks your phone) to your computer. You can find redsnOw on the following sites:

After downloading redsnOw, you will need to download the jailbroken software for your iPhone.

Click on the drop down box for iPhone and download iPhone 3GS (3.0/ 7A341)

You will have to use 3.0 even though you already have software version 3.0.1. This will not make any big changes, so there is nothing to worry about. :

begin jailbreaking. Unzip the redsnOw folder and run the redsnOw.exe program. Once the program opens up, you will have to browse for the iPhone 3GS (3.0/ 7A341) software and select it.

RedsnOw will then run through some processes and you will be asked to install Cydia and/or install Icy. There is rumor that installing Icy crashes the iPhone, so I suggest only clicking on Install Cydia.

After selecting Install Cydia, turn off the iP- hone and plug it into your computer. Click next on the redsnOw program, and follow the instruc- tions on the screen.

After step 3 you can sit back and watch red- snOw jailbreak your iPhone for you. Make sure you keep holding the home switch down till you see a picture of a pineapple running. You can now sit back and relax as your iPhone restarts. This is what a Jailbroken iPhone will look like.
