does not do his duty; and that the Stipendiary Magistrate is over-scrupulous in requiring of witnesses a statement that the “ beer ” they buy is intoxicating. We have aothirg to say concerning the truth or untrath ef any of these statements. That which we know we state, viz. that drunkenness abounds to a lamentable extent under existing conditions, and that the Canada Temperance Act continues to be constantly violated, tothe disappoint- ment of law-abiding citizens and the disgrace of the community.

We feel sure that the Mayor and Coun- cillors, one and ail, share the pain and chagrin of those who hoped for a marced improvemect asa result of the actiou. taken in Augaat last,—the more so that they are under oath to uphold the laws of the City. We feel sure that they are, one and all, willing to make any re- sonable change in the conditions that may seem likely to result in the enforcement of the Canada Temperance Act. Would it not be worth while to risk a few prosecu- tions for perjury on the part of Scott Act witnesses ? Would it not be well to try the effe:t of a change of prosecutors? Ik

Up to Thursday morning, according to a laie despatch from New York, there had been ordered from the Bank of England for export to the United States nearly #3,500,000, the destination of which is un- known. The receipts of gold on Friday and Saturday will be very large and among them may be some of this unac- counted for $3,500,000. Good authorities say that more gold will be engaged this week and at least $1,000,000 will arrive at New York within eight days.

But now that their eyes have been opened, they wish that they were home again.
