Dear Mr. Dowling

All my professors are ‘‘dears’’ (to adopt an Island colloquialism), but you, sir, are the first I have had by correspondence, in absentia and defunct yet functional! You just may be setting a new trend, money saving for the University of course.

Your daring precedent could encourage the BOG directors to solicit, encourage, draft all those “‘over the hill’’ professors of 65 and over to volunteer their services -- free of charge -- for pertinent short cryptic courses in the various disciplines of their past (dare I say passe?) expertise. Since they would not be paid, I feel it would be fair to students only if they do not have to pay for these high profile, highly specialized courses. Bonuses for the eager students, with credits of course towards honour subjects.

The Assignment

Question 1 a) The Board consists of 22 members, providing the Univer- sity Act is adhered to.

1 b) The average salary is Zero (not 0). 0 / 22 = x or more correctly 22 * 0 which in New Math is 220 but is that in cents, dollars or pesos?

Footnote: I am not sure if the above answer is correct. In the fall of 1974 I had a traumatic experience when I took math at UPEI from a young (so was I) professor. He was so ‘‘cool’’ and casual with his long hair and beard, unfortunately his tongue was more acid than flower child. He gave me little if any encour- agement. I dropped after four months even though I was doing very well in my other education courses. This time around I avoid young professors like the plague (exception made for Vicki Johnson, University 100. Vicki is a born teacher who loves what she is doing).

Question 2: There is not any, so how can I write about it? However since I am not one to shirk an assign- ment or to argue with a professor I

have not met, and since I enjoy a good challenge in writing essays, short or long I will give it my best shot.

If there is wildlife in the BOG, it is a well-kept secret, known only to the BOG dwellers themselves, which makes it almost impossible to write about. Even my favourite RL people could not steer me in the right direc- tion this time and assured me that no other student had made a similar request.

If there is wildlife in the BOG, should we not let Island Nature Trust know in order that it may be preserved for posterity? After all, we do not want people from ‘‘away’’ or even indigenous people shooting from the hip (or from the mouth) at a species as precious as the plover. Just maybe, the wildlife in the BOG is already preserved or even pickled, depending on bog conditions.

lam sure that other concerned students like myself would like to know the facts, because to know the facts and to be able to spill them off at exam time is to be educated. Getting a diploma or a job are merely fringe benefits. Speaking for myself, all I am looking for are facts, and getting the facts can be fun if you have the right approach and a ‘‘seasoned’’ professor.

Dear Editor,

When I first heard about UPEI’s new application fee I was surprised that we didn’t already have one. I have spent the last few years looking at many different programs at many different universities and every last one of them had a significant application fee. I had forgotten that deciding to come to UPEI had cost me no money.

So it seems this would be an easy way to make a few dollars. Everyone else does it so we should too. WRONG! This is not a legitimate reason to charge a new fee at UPEI. Although I seem to remember this logic being used for the parking fee. The fact that everyone else charges one is a great reason for us not to charge a fee. Show people how unique we are and how much we want them to come to this institution. In'this age of ever declining enrollment, especially at UPEI, deciding to charge this fee will do nothing but discourage people from applying and therefore coming to this university. It doesn’t make sense. All this new energy is being spent on more recruitment and surveying people who choose not to come here, and we are going to outweigh any positive benefits of that with a fee.

The fee is quite high compared to other institutions. It has been set at this high rate in order to prevent it from being raised in the future. That is incredibly good reasoning. I think we should raise tuition to $6000 next year and then be proud of the fact we have zero increases for the next ten years. It seems about as logical as this fee.
