MARRIAGE oF THE Mayor oF HALirax.— At six o'clock yesterday morning, His Worship Mayor Frazer of Halifax was married to Mrs. Minnie Thomson, of St. John. ‘The ceremony was privately performed at the residence of the bride, No. 76 Queen street, by the Rev. Mr. Cross, of the Germain street Baptist Church. The happy couple left the city by the “Flying Yankee,” on their way to Portland, from whence they goona visit t» Worcester and through the Eastern States. They will return to St. John in about ten days time, and will stay at the Royal Hotel, where they will receive the congratulations of their numerous friends. Mrs. Thomson's family will accompany the bride to Halifax,

Pror. J. Herscues Smeru at Livres Yor«K. —This gentleman made his first appearance as ajpublic instructor here on Friday evening. Some curiosity was excited about his abilities as he was described on the handbills as both talented, brilliant and popular. Then the bill of fare was both fail and varied, French and Scotch songs, an essay on bis Satanic majesty, and music, were some of the chief attractions offered. The professors voice proved to be very husky from a severe cold recently caught, and the organette was slightly rheumatic in its movements, and con- sequently somewhat jerky in its notes. How- ever, though the audience was not burdened with anything very learned or dry, it managed to enjoy itseli fairly well.

Sav Drowsixe Accrmpent.—A very sad drownin cident oceurred in the East River, a little below the old foundry, on Wednesday afternoon, by which two men, Joseph Hughbs- herg and Joseph Plussinger, lost their lives. They were two of the Bohemian glass- blowers brought here last spring, unmarried, and aged respectively nineteen and twenty-five. It appears that the men took a boat which filled with water. They jomped and fell out, hav- in water. A countryman of theirs standing on the shore called to them to separate, and then swam out to assist them. by the feet, but his sb es being loose came off, which probably saved his hie. The b dies were recovered close together after being in the water two hours. — Pictou News.

A Fisnerman’s Severe Svrrertxc.-—A sailor has been forwarded from St, John by Consul there, to his home at Gloucester, Mass. While on the passage he told the followiag story; Itseems the sajlor and his cham were off the Banks in their dory setting trawls. The fog shut down on them and they were unable to find their vessel. On the second day a storm came on and it was only by a miracle they managed to keep from caps zing The storm abated the third day and then began their sufferings’ They had pot a drop of water or a bit of bread. The fog was continu ally lifting and shutting down. At times they would see vessels and hail them and then t “fox would thicken down around them, dispelling all hopes of rescue. The desire for water amounted to fearful torture, and it is probable the dampness that saturated their clothes was all that kept them alive. Codfishing is said to be unusually good, but fishermen won’t keep at it while there isany chance of catching a dozen of mackerel a week, This is an un- fortunate feature of the business, as the Cara- quet boats are said to be doing well at the codfish, — Pioneer.

A meetiNo of the wholesale crockery firms at the various points between Montreal and London, those cities included, was held at Kingston, Ont., on the 7th inst., for the purpose of forming an association of the icrockery trade. This was accomplished and lthe organization will be known as ‘The | Crock ry and Glassware Association of Can- ada.” Mr, Adam Darling, of Montreal, was | elected its first president, Mr. W. J. Reld, of London, vice-president, and Mr. John Edgar, of Toronto, secretary-treasurer. Among its | purposes are the abolition of dating ahead, the | cultivation of short terms of credit, and the | doing away with the sale of certain leading | articles at or under cost, an absurdity which ‘has too long prevailed in ‘his as in other lines | of trace.
