Lighthouse Service.
The total number of light stations in the Dominion on the 31st December last was 534, and of lights shown 625; the number of steam fog-whistles and automatic fog- horns 39, and the number of light-keepers, engineers of fog-whistles and other assist- ants, with crews of light-ships, was 682.
, inthis Province at the close of naviga- ition there were 47 lights in operation un- der charge of 35 keepers. The majority of these lights are situated on headlands, and serve the general purposes of navigation; the remainder are harbor lights, and in- tended principally for the benetit of the fishermen.
Two range lights during the past season were established at Big Miminigash on the west coast of Prince Kdward Island. The outer or front range light is shown from a lantern hoisted upon a mast which stands about 500 feet south of the breakwater. This light, showing fixed red and fixed white, according to the bearings, . is elevat- éd 30 feet above high water mark, and should be visible 5 miles. The inner or back range light is located upon Rix’s Point, about one mile S.$ W. from the front light, and is fixed white in character. elevated 45 feet above high water and visi- ble about 8 miles.
The East Point light now stands within 200 feet of the extreme eastern puint and 250 feet from the suuth shore of East Point. The character of the light is unchanged, being, as heretofore, revolving white, at- taining its greatest brilliancy every 3 minu- tes. The light is elevated 100 feet above high water level, and should be visible 15 miles in clear weather. The fog-horn, es- tablished at this station in October, 1885, is operated by compressed air and sounds a blast of 8 seconds, duration every half minute. The fog-alarm building stands at a distance of 100 feet to the eastward of the lighthouse tower, and these two build- ings in one, roughly indicate the range of the outermost end of East Point Reef.

A Horse Shoe Contest
A horse shoe making contest for the championship of the world and $500, took place at Buttalo, on Tuesday, between Martin J. Dunn, of Detroit, and John Campbell, of Buffalo. Each contestant had five helpers. The match was for 200 shoes, each to turn the half shoe first and finish the shoe after 200 halves had been completed. One hour and 27 minutes from the start Campbell was six halves ahead. On the work of completing the shoes he retained this advantage, and in 2 hours 33 minutes finished the 200, 15 shoes ahead of his opponent. A large sum of money changed hands on the result.

The Dominion and Nova Scotia resolutions in condemnation of the Irish crimes bill are still but little noticed in London. John Mor- ley, on Thursday night, referred to them in support of his opposition to the bill.
The St. James’ Gazette wonders what the Canadians would say if the [u,perial House of Commons passed a resolution in favor of re- leasing Nova Scotia from the union. Our colonial cousins, says the Gazette, would not like it and England would hear plain words indeed, yet the Imperial Parliament has a perfect technical right to interfere in Cana- diau matters, while the Deminion has none Whatever to interfere in british politics, Continuing, the Gazette says: ‘‘While we are not inclined to take the resolutions too seri- ously, it would have shown better taste and statesmanship to have let the matter alone. These votes only become mischievous when used as arguments in the House of Commons. Wien the Fuglish party politician tell us he has got the Canadians on his side it is diffi- cult to avoid reminding the colonists that they have nothing to do with domestic polities and that their interference is very much out vl place. The Gazette objects to this rather foolish piece of Canadian officiousness a sort of threatening to the Imperial Pa) liament.
The Pall Mall Gazette approves of the reso lution, and speaks of the significance of the division, which may be aitributed to the Irish vote, which shows its power in passing so im- portant a resolution. ae majori- ties may wax and wane, but the Irish vote is # permanent factor in colonial polities.
Yhe Evening News says itis very kind of Canadian Liberals and the Irish element to teach us what we ought todo. It pities the Canadian Parliament that it has nothing bet- ter to do than pass aimless resolutions of the school debating society order.
The Daily Chronicle vegards the resolutions as very impertinent. It says if the Imperial House of Commons were to pass a resolution atfirming the right of French half-breeds in Canada to cut the throats of Canadians who are loyal, thé Dominion— we do not say the Canadians—would ignore it. We fear they would retort with considerable degree of as- perity. When the American or Canadian legislatures pass resolutions of this sort they demonstrate their untitness for the exercise of legislative functions.
The Globe regrets that Mr. Blake lent him- self to amovement with which Canada has nothing todo. Canadian Liberals have grave- ly discredited themselves asa party, while the supporters of the government, by voting in opposition, show a want of patriotism or wis- dom which o ight to tell against them in the eyes of their constituents. It is glad to learn that the Canadian press, which is much more representative of public opinion, condemns the vote.
