Wat He Founp tn tHe Meat.—Says the Halifax Chronicle : Yesterday a city gentle- man in carving a piece of roast beef was as- tonished to find a large sewing needle imbed- ded in the meat right beside a bone. The animal evidently had been carrying the needle in that position for some time.

A Warysive.—A young woman named Rid dle, belonging to Springdale, Ohio, committed suicide a few daysago, by jumping into a well attached to her father’s farm. She ar- rayed herself in her new spring dress, pata sol, gloves and all, and jumped into the well, which was fifty feet. Disappo'ntment in love was the cause.

A three minute, green and a free for all race will take place on that day. There will be a mateh race on Saturday, 23rd inst., between John Curran’s mare, Lady May, and G. R. Gay's horse, Blizzard, for $25 a side.

Serious AccipENT.—A carpenter named Barry met with a serious accident this fore- noon. While changing the glass in the show window of Connolly & Co's, store, on Queen Street, one of the panes fell upon his arm, severing the muscles and the two arteries about midway between the wrist and elbow. The unfortunate man was at once removed to the Charlottetown Hospital, where the wound was dressed by Drs. Conroy and Kelly. Mr. Barry is now duing well.

A Mrpxicat Prow.er. — About one o'clock this morning, Master Don. Strong, son of Robt. A. Strong, Esq., who resides on the corner of Grafton and Weymouth Streets, returned from a party held at the house of a friend. While in the act of lighting a lamp in the dining room, he observed a big rough looking man staring in through the window. He at once blew out the match, and going to the window saw the intruder jump over the high fence enclosing the yard and escape to the street. The boy's next move was to run ap stairs and look out the window, from which he could obtain a good view of the street, and be saw the man going -down the street, every once in a while louking behind to see if he were pursued. Had the visitor not been seen when he was Mr. Strong's silver would doubtless have been missing this morn- ing. There are a good many rough men hovering about the city at the present time and it would be well for citizens generally to gee that their doors and windows are properly

Haurrax, N. S., June 12.

Admiral Gordon, in the flagship Acadia, was in Arichat to-day, inquiring into the depredations of the American pirates, and subsequently proceeded eastward, following the trail of the American fleet. Interview- ed by your correspondent, he said the Government were doing everything in their power to protect the fisheries, but it was impossible to have a cruiser at every point of our extensive seacoast. He under-

stood the most part of the damage done to Canadian nets was outside the three-mile limit, where Canada

bad no jurisdiction, and cruisers could not interfere. In cases of this kind the only course for the Canadian fishermen was to take legal action in our courts against the guilty parties. If they did that he would guarantee service and execution of the papers. He urged the fishermen whose nets were recent ly destroyed by the vessels whose names were known, to proceed against them in the courts.

The new cruiser launched at Shelburne has been named C. H. Tupper. She will be commanded by Capt. Quigley.

The American fleet made splendid hauls of mackerel in Chedabucto Bay on Satur- day. One schooner seined 400 barrels of tish off Ketch ‘Harbor, Halifax, a few days ago,

RECEPTION AT MONTREAL.

Monrreat, June 12.

Lord and Lady Stanley and suite were met at the station to-day by Mayor Abbott and a large concourse of citizens, At the City welcome, to which Lord Stanley replied, thanking the citizens for the cordiality of his reception.

Sir William Dawson and the Governors of McGill University also presented Lord Stanley with an address to which he re- plied. Subsequently the Mayor and mem- bers of the reception committee lunched with Lord Stanley at the Windsor.

The vice-regal party left to-night by boat for Quebec.

A feam attached to an express wagon, containing ten persons, ran away while com- ing down Cate des Niegrs hill this morning, overturned the wagon and threw the whole party out. One man was killed and the others injured; some seriously.

THE EMPEROR.

A New Development.

The greatest anxiety prevails here through some changes of the exact nature of which the doctors are uncertain. The car- tilage of the Emperor's epiglottis has be- come permeable, allowing particles of food and liquids to enter the air tubes, the re- sult being attacks of coughing and choking. The Emperor is weakening rapidly. The doctors admit he is in an almost hopeless condition.

The Crown Prince was summoned to the palace at midnight. The Emperor can be fed only by artificial means.

The Cumberland Election

Hatrrax June 11.

The Third Party convention in Cumber- land to-night nominated C. R. Casey as its candidate, Casey receiving 80 votes in the convention to 16 for Bulmer, who fought the previous Third Party battles. “Casey was formerly a Liberal-Conservative. No Grit candidate is yet in the field, but the Grits will shortly hold a convention to dis- cuss the situation.

Quite a number of the Ontario and Lower Province delegates to the Presbyterian General Assembly arrived to-day, but the greater bulk are expected by to-morrow’s train.

It is generally conceeded now that Min- ister of Fisheries Tupper will be returned for Pictou by acclamation.

Ottawa News. Orrawa, June 12.

The Newfoundland delegates are expect- ed co arrive here in September to confer regarding the proposed annexation of that Colony. A special cablegram states that the Im- perial Government have decided to grant fifty-one thousand pounds to establish a naval station at Esquimaux. The Supreme Court sat to-day and ad- journed till to-morrow, when a quorum of judges will be present. Justice Tarschereau arrived from Europe to-night. The Department of Customs have been apprised of the seizure of a large quantity of steel wire intended for the Joggins raft. Advices from London indicate that the new Canadian loan of £4,000,000 stg. is an assured success. It is probable that the newly arrived crofters will be settled at Pelican Lake, Southern Manitoba.
