for the season; which was on Colonial Flour at that ‘time, two shillings and sixpence per barrel.

“That it has pleased Providence this season to visit the Island with a less abundant crop than the former, consequently a greater necessity exists of abandoning the present duty, when it is considered that with a greater scarcity, the duty of eight shillings and sixpence is imposed. im

“ Your Memorialists therefore humbly pray that your Excellency in Council will be pleased to take upon your- selves the responsibility of removing the duty of eight shillings and sixpence per barrel on Flour, or guarantee to those who may import Flour before the meeting of the Legislature, the return of the duties paid by them, after such an order in Council may have passed, when

the Legislature shall have rescinded the duty in the forthcoming Session.”

His Excellency also laid before the Board a guarantee subscribed by several Members ofthe House of As- sembly, undertaking, by their individual votes, to support a grant when in Supply, for the remission of the duty upon Flour, which may be imported after the date of an Order in Council, acceding tothe prayer of the fore- going Memorial.

Whereupon the Board expressed its opinion, that as the Revenue Law of the Island does not empower the Executive Government to suspend its operation in any

articular, the Board regrets its inability to advise His’ ste to comply with the prayer of the Memorial- ists. More especially as the power which His Excel- lency is now called upon to exercise, has been refused, by the rejection ofa Billin the House of Assembly passsed by the Legislative Council in the Session of 1846, conferring on the Lieutenant Governor in Council the power “to suspend the duties upon the importation of all Bread stuffs and provisions,” in cases of urgent neces- ‘sity.

EDUCATION, — Kent Street Seminary. MR. J. LE PAGE respectfully intimates to

the public of Charlottetown, that he has removed his School from its former site to Mr. Jury’s Building, Kent Street, where, in connexion with Mr. A. McNeill, he will continue the business of instruction as heretofore. Messrs. Le Page & McNeill take this opportunity of expressing their thanks to those who have supported them so liberally hitherto; and now—having engaged and fitted up the commodious rcom in the above named Building, with an especial regard to the comfort and convenience of pupils--they look forward with confi- dence for a continuation of that support which ought ever to be awarded to those engaged in the responsible duties of imparting instruction to the young ;—a support which it shall be, at all times, their chief ambition to merit.
