End. Many of these squares and streets, consisting of palatial houses, were built on the Grosvenor ground, but not with the Grosvenor money. The London practice ig to lease out the building lots at so much annual ground rent; for the tenant to build the houses according to certain architectural plans supplied by the ground landlord, so as to secure uniformity of appearance and construction. The ground is generally leased ninety nine years, at the expiration of which time it reverts to the landlord, together with whatever edifice has been constructed upon it. . w I

Of course, as each of these houses comes hack to thé landlord, the grandson of the present Marquis of Weste minster, who may be living when these reversions came into operation, will find his London income marvellously augment- ed—for if the rent for the mere ground of a fashionable dwelling in “ Belgravia,” (so called because the Marquis is also Isaron Belgrave) be estimated at £300 a year, the dwelling itself, when it falls back, literally for nothing, as part of the Grosvenor estate, will be worth ten times as wuch. Whoever may be Marquis of Westminster in the year 1900, may estimate his London property at £1,000,000 to £1,500,900 per annum. A comfortable income for one man —unless, indeed, by that time the artificial distinction of rank shall have become things of the past—to be philosophically contemplated by Mr. Macaulay’s Australian citizen, as he sits on the ruins of St. Paul's calmly smoking his pipe, and musing on the decay of great empires, .

Inaris —The brave defender of Lucknow, our countryman, John Eardley Wilmot Inglis, son of the late Lord Bispop of Nova Scotia, whose services during the recent mutiny in the East have shone out with resplendaot lustre, entered the British army in the 320d Foot, as Eusign by purchase, Aug. 2, 1533. He was promoted to be a Lieut- enant, Jan. 19, 1839, without purchase ; Captain by purchase, Sept. 29, 1843; Major by purchase, Feb. 25, 1848; Bt. Lieut. Colonel, June 7, 1#49; Lt. Colonel, Feb. 20, 1855 ; Uolonel, June 5, 1855. Colonel Inglis served with the 82d in Canada during the rebellion of 1837, and was present ia the actions of St. Denis and St. Eustache. He served dur- ing the Puvjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present at the Ist and 2d siege operations before Mooltan, including the attack on the enemy’s position in front of the advanced trenches on the 12th Sept., where, after the death @ Licut. Colonel Pattoun, he succeeded to the command of the right column of attack ; commanded the 32nd at the action of Soorjkoond ; and was also present at the storm and capture of the city and surrender of the fortress of Mooltan, also surrender of the fort and garrison of Chenioie, and battlé of Goojerat, for which services he received the Brevet rank
