Dam ace BY Ratn.—The rains of last week caused a rise in the streams of some parts of the Island, and the very heavy rain of Sun- day caused a freshet which washed out many of the mill dams im the country. The dam over Haywood’s mill stream, Mill River, was one of these carried away, and its proximity to the raiiway caused a washout in the em- bankment of the road and slight damages to the railway brid ge over that stream, which have since been re paired.

Cyctone. —A veritable cyclone, accompanied by thunder and lightning and a tremendous downpour of rain, passed over a portion of western Prince County on Sunday last. The hurricane came from the northwest, and struck heaviest in the vicinity of Bloomfield aud the junction of the O’Leary and Western Roads. Luckily, it was confined to narrow limits, covering an area of not more than five miles in length and one mile in width, so that the damage is not very heavy. A barn blown down, a house and a barn uuroofed, a portion of a schoolhouse carried away, and fences and trees in the path of the storm levelled to the ground, are some of the disastrous effects reported We are pleased to learn that the crops in the district over which it passed escaped uninjured.

At two o'clock this afternvon the strik- ers’ committee reported to the stock yards that the strikers switching association had decided to accept the proposition of the switchmen in which they ask for 29 cents an hour for engineers, and 18 cents for firemen. A Dangerous Obstruction.

CHatmamM, Mass., Aug. 25.

United States Engineer Rostock, from Newport, who has been examining the wreck of the schooner Weybossett, reports avery dangerous obstruction about 700 feet south-west of the bell buoy north of Pollock Rip Lightship. The wreck lies directly in the best water across the channel, making it necessary for captains to keep a sharp look out till the Government buoys or de- stroys it.

Connection Made. SARNIA, Aug. 25. To-day connection was made between the two ends of the Grand Trunk tunnel under the St. Clair River. At noon men were able to walk through the tunnel the en- tire distance from Sarnia to Port Huron.

A Total Loss.

Harirax, Ang. 25. The American ship Parker M. Whit- more, ashore at Lockport, will provea total loss. She is now full of water. Her crew and ship stores were landed safely.

Incendiary Fires. New Beprorp, Mass., Aug 25. Three incendiary fires have been started in this city since Saturday night. The fires were extinguished without doing much damage.

County Court.—The County Court met to- day. The docket consists of 214 new suits and seven remanets, about half of which stand for trial.

BAp Porato Crop.— The Londonderry, Ire., Sentinel prints reports from its correg- pondents in 25 centres of population in Don- egal. These reports attest the ravages of the potato blight in the poverty-stricken and con- gested districts of Falcarraga and Gweedore. The crop is almost a total failure, and the outlook is worse than at any time since the famine year of 1846.

ACCIDENTALLY PoisoneD.—It is reported that some of the members of a family living at Tryon and one or two of their friends had a narrow escape from death by poisoning re- cently. 1t appears that they ate some rasp- berries picked in a field adjoining a potato patch which had been sprinkled with Paris Green, and some of the “‘bug medicine” must have been accidentally placed upon the berry bushes. A short time after eating the berries the people took sick and began vomit- ing. A medical man was summoned but by the time he arrived on the scene the danger- ous period was past, the vomiting having saved their lives. Paris Green is a very good antidote for the potato bug, but the greatest care should be exercised in using it.
