The civil government was at firat convinced of the guilt of Dreyfus, and added to imprisonmeat torture of the most terrible kind—torture of body with fester- ing irons, and torture of soul by lies about his wife’s fidelity. Now the civil govern~ ment has discovered its mistake, and is ready to do justice. But the chiefs of the army are in rebellion, and are determined that the conviction shall stand. The generals even deny the facis as confessed and proved.

The question is, ehall law and justice prevail or shali the army control the Re- public, and rule superiorto the law? In the latter case the French nation is again at the brink of revolution.
