MEETINGS IN QUEEN’S EAST.

A large number of electors assemb'ed at Milltown on Saturday, June 6th, to bear Messrs. Martin and Welsh, the candidates for East Queen’s. Mr. Henry Campbell, on being appointed chairman, called upon Mr. Welsh, who addressed the electors for ac hour, He said the C. P. R. cost the Dominion $100,000.600, besides a large land grant.

Mr. Martin, who, on rising to reply, was heartily applauded —something that seem- ed to be forgotten when M>. Welsh was called upon—showed how that gentleman had been but $38,000,000 astray in his re- ference to the C. P. K., and that his state- ment was On a par with other statements made there and at other meetings, where be eaid the duty on iron was $50 a ton. He showed from Uansard the stand the com- modore had taken on the railway question, which cansed Mr. Welsh to get very un- easy. His able treatment of varicus ques- tions had aremarkable effect upon the audience.

Mr. McKinnon, M. L. A., fullowed. ‘Three cheers were given for Mr. Martin andthe railway, but Mr. Welsh received aotone. The meeting, which was to be held at 6 o’c.uck, Owing to a mistake with regard to the place of meeting was not opened till about 8 o’clock, and it being nearly 1l when Mr. McKinnon resumed his seat, Mr. Clow thought it prudent to make but a few remarks. The assembly was orderly throughout. All the speakers receivea a good hearing, and the candid: t:s seemed to be on the most friendly terme.

The Schoolhouse at Grand View was crowded on Monday night, 8th inst., to hear the public questions of the day dis- cussed by the cand dates and their friends. Mr. Donald Gillis occupied the chair. Mr. Martin spoke for an hour and a half and fully explained his views on the trade and Manitcba school questions. Mr. Martia is a clever politician and & good speaker. He made adeep impree- sion upon the intelligent electors of this section of East Queen’s, and on resuming his seat was again and again cheered by the large audience.

The next speaker was Mr. Welsh, who spoke fairly well and received a fair hear- ing. His statements, as usual, were wild exaggeraticns.

Mr. John Grant spoke at considerable length, and endorsed the able speech made by Mr. Martin.

Mr. Heetor C. McDonald made a feeble reply, aud was subjected to continual jeere, under which be floundered pitifully.

The meeting closed ata late hour, and was a most satisfactory one for Mr. Mar- tio.

MEETING IN WEST QUEEN'S.

A big meeting was held at Clifton yes- terday afternoon. It opened at two o'clock and was not closed until seven. About 300 percons were present. The meeting «as addressed by Dr. Jenkins and Messrs. On Tuesday evening, the 2nd inst., a large meeting of the electors of this poli was held in the Little River Hall to listen to the policies of the respective candidates in the forthcoming contest.,

The meeting was called to order by ap-- pointing Wm. Norton, Esq, chairman, and the undersigaed secretary,

Dr. McIntyre was the first speaker called on. He endtavored to show the electors how they would be benefitted by free trade with the United States; that tiey would get so much more for potatoes, oats, eggs, etc. His explanation of how revenue and expenditure ceuld be equal- ized under his policy was not very clear to the audience, and he unwitting)y passed several compliments to the N. P.

A.C. McDonald, the Conservative can- dilate was the next speaker. He was in splendid form, and delivered one wf the best campaign speeches listened to by this audience fora longtime. He com pletely riddled the Doetor’s arguments ore after another, and his clear exposition of the policy of his party, and his manly and straightforward manner of enunciating the gieat principles. of the N. P., was attentively followed by the large audi- ence present and made a eplendid im- pression.

Mr. Kickham, a!though not a “candidate this time, did what he considered his duty to his party in a brief address. He was followed by J. C. Underhay, Esq., wh: always gets an attentive hearing here. His exp'anation of the school question wae clear and made a deep impression. Mr Underhay is deservedly resp-cted here and his words always have great weight.

Mr. Hughes made a few remarks in favor of Mr. Laurier, but to a reading peo- ple, such as we have here, his remarks did not apply and consequently made no impression,
