After scaling the wall, by means of two planks, they were seen by the guards in the watch-housé, who fired on) them, wounding Dixon ‘in three places: When McQueen saw this he stopped. The doctor considers the wounds are not fatal.

T. G. Marquis, who has been spending a part of his vacation with his family in Chatham, left Tuesday night for Queen’s University, Kingston. A Dalhousie correspondent sends the Moncton Times the following: We regret to announce the death of the Hon. Wm. Hamilton, which occurred yesterday morn- ; ing at his late residence, Daihousie, N. B. Mr. Hamilton was 76 ycars of age, and by }far the senior member of the Legislative Council. Below will be found a sketch of | his life, taken from'the Canadian Parlia- mentry Companion: Is descended from one of the Hamiltons, a native of King’s Cross, Island of Arran, Scotland, who was the | first,settler and the first merchant in Dal- housie, N. B., that town having been first named ‘‘ New Hamiltoa” after him. Born at King’s Cross, Arran, in 1811, came to Canada in 1824, married in 1839, Jane, eldest daughter of Joseph McEwan, Esq., of P. E. Island. She died m 1880. Is a retired merchant. Has been Judge of the Inferior Court Common Pleas, and Wardeu of the County of Restigouche. Called to the L. ©. in 1853. A Conservative. A Dalhousie despatch tothe Globe says : Hon, William Hamilton. M. L. C., of Dalhousie, who has been a sufferer from Bright’s dis- ease fortwo years past, died this morning, Dr. Bayard, of St. John, has been in at- tendence. The more immediate cause of his death was congestion of the lungs, Mr. Hamilton having taken cold on a recent trip te Gaspe. The deceased was one of the most wealthy men in Restigouche. On the farm of Peter Bainter, near Terre Haute, Ind., is a well 20 feet deep, which throws up shells and _ acorns, although: there are no oaks for miles around.

Clinton E. Williams, aged only 23, ar- rested in Baltimore on a charge of bigamy, has confessed to marrying five ditterent women within four years.

Julian F. Mills, of Saranac, Mich., was arrested for drunkness and his sweetheart heard of it and broke the engagement. Julian says that he wasn’t drunk and he has sued the town for $20,000 damages fur the lost affection of the girl.

The entries for the Lewiston, Me., state fair, not yet completed, show 1,000 entries stock, 225 of exhibition horses, 150 for trotting and large numbers of matched oxen and steers. Eight hundred entries are of thoroughbreds. This is the largest number of entries ever made in Maine for an exhibition.

A Lincoln, Neb., young girl was dressing in ber room during a thunderstorm when her pug dog ran in. She clasped it to her bosom and a flash of lighting instantly killed it. She was horrified vo find that an image of her dog had been photugraphed on her bosom. ‘Ihere seems to be no way of removing the picture, which gives every shade, color and wrinkle of the canine’s form,

While farm hands were threshing on the farm of Lyman Curtis, five miles east of Flint, Mich., on Tuesday, the grain stacker caught tire, and while the men were fighting the tire the steam bviler exploded, killmg Daniel Steegar outright and severely injar- ing William Rockwood, John Bennett and three young ladies who were assisting. The barns, with the entire crop of the sea- son, are destroyed. The house and yard have the appearance of a hospital.
