Panthers leave tough weekend behind

The UPEI Hockey Pan- thers had a tough week- end last week as they trav- elled to Nova Scotia to play two of the toughest teams in the AUAA. On Saturday the Panthers met up with the Dalhousie Tigers, who wished to seek revenge for their playoff loss last year to the Panthers. The Tigers ex- ploded for three unanswered third period goals to snap a 4-4 tie em route to a 7- 4 victory. Scoring for the Panthers were Jerry Fleming and Greg Gravel with two goals apiece.

The UPEI Women’s Vol- leyball Panthers started of their season on the week- end with a pair of games at the Alumni Gym against the powerful Universite de Moncton Blue Eagles. The girls played strong volleyball but fell short of Moncton los- ing both matches in three straight games.

I think that volleyball will be a bright spot here at UPEI as this years team looks much improved over last year’s. Last year many on the team were rookies and now that they have one season under their belt they could be a strong team in the AUAA this season. 8

AS PEI prepares for the 1991 Winter Games,it also prepares to enter the history books. For the first time ever, women will be compet- ing in hockey at Games.

Ottawa announced last week what events will be con- ducted on PEI in 1991 as part the Games. Jack Kane, a member of PEI’s Host Soci- ety for the Games, feels this is a key decision. “You have to know what games you’re playing before you can really start to plan.”

In addition. to women’s hockey, the are a few other suprises. PEI scores a ha- trick by hosting all three of men’s hockey, women’s hockey and ringette. We rally for two points with both
