Finz.—It is reported that the house of Mr. A. McGilvary, Grand River Road, wae totally destroyed by fire on the night of the 26th ult. Everything in it was burned up. Mr. McGilvary estimates his loss at $1,000. To be unhoused at this inclement season is a great misfortune.

Accidents in Sr. Jonn. — Five boys coasted over a wharf in Indiantown, and had a narrow escape from being drowned. Two drunken men fell over a_ precipice, about thirty feet deep, on tt aight Sho:e road and escaped with few injuries.

Murpersp.—A man named Hamilton was murdered at Omemee, UOnt.,.on the lith, by Henry Wood. Death was caused by a blow froma slingshot. Wood has been arrested at Ux ridge.

Norice is given in the Gazette that appli- cation will be made at the next session of the Dominion Parliament for an Act incor- porating the Presbyterian Church of Can- ada imconnection with the Church of Scoi- land.

Pacific Railway

The Secretary of the Interior has issued his report upon Pacific Railroads, called for by the United States Congress. It is a clear succzint account of the relations exist- ing between the Government and the Paci- fic Railroads. It also contains some valu- able railroad statistics, which it condenses, compat the existing trans-continentai system with the remaining railroads of the United States, demonstrating thereby the great advantage which these Pacific rail- roads possess over all others in the principal elemsnts of successful railroading, viz. , high tariffs and limited competition.

The.total indebtedness of the Pacific rail- roads to the U. S. Government, October 31st, 1877, amounted to :-—

The Special Medal to Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing Company.

Extract from the Judges’ Report :

‘The recommendation we hereby submit :—

‘“*The great advantage which it obtains in its distinctive feature, the Rotative Hook, over the class of machines using the reciprocating shuttle, is one which needs, to show it, no spe- cial demonstration ; it being apparent at once, not only to the educated mechanic, but to any intelligent observer.”

The Report concluded :

“The tension is more easily adjusted and needs less regulating than any other that we know of. The range of work successfully per

spurious ‘‘Fatker of Four Daughters’ was a young ignoramus of the lowest order of the ape tribe, who vainly sought by these effusions tv raise himself afew degrees higher in tie estimation of the public than either nature or his education allowed. Who but a corner lo -fer or brainless fop would be so very stapid as to state that a Cashier of a bank was a mere figure head ?

For the amusement (fam sorry that I can- not with trath add instraction) of your read- | ers, | will now display a few of the many literary gems contained in this ‘ Fathzr’s’’ beautiful collection of choice literature. ‘His letter (2) isacopy of my own.” If such is really the case, I am not surprised that the note of interrogation was placed after ‘‘ Ler- rer.” ‘‘Llook upon him as not two degress removed from a fool.” Thanks, kind ‘‘ Father of Four Daughters,” for this warning. Not lik- ing the company of a fool, I wil remove several more degrees from your presence, I fad not the most remote idea, until informed through the above.quoted sentence, that I was ‘iving within two degrees of such a brilliant literary character as the ‘‘Father of Four Daughters.” ‘‘Never allow him to play with pen and ink.” This playing with pen and ink is a game which “F. F. D.” understands per- fectly, as showa by the three samples wuich nave been exhibited during the past few days.

My first letter was written simply and solely for the purpose of throwing out such insinu- ations, in reference to this ‘‘ Father,” as would prove t» the citizens of Charlottetown that the

rson accused, by many, of scribbling over the non de plume of ‘* Father of four Daugh- ters,” although of weak intellect, was not quite fool enough to pen such trash.

Isgain request this spurious ‘‘ Father of Four Daughters” to throw off his mask and come out in print over his proper siguature, so that the public may have the privilege of gazing on ‘‘the missing link” long looked for im vain by Darwin.
