large barn on the farm of Mr. Geo. E Hughes, of the Apothecaries Hall, was de- stroyed by fire yesterday afternoun, tv- gether with one horse and all the farm implements and crep The farm is at Bro kfichi, about two miles from Hunter River. The barn destroyed was one of the best in that section of the country. It wes located about sixty fee from the dwelling house, which is occupied by Wallaca Hughes (brother of the owner) who man- ages the farm Mr. Hughes was away at the time of the fice, and there was nu one home but his wife Several of the men living in the neighborho:d were also absent frum home The fire evidently started in the loft among the hay, and was csused, it is thought, by a spark trom the chimney of the dwelling house entermg through the loft window or door which was open. Mr. John Handerson, of North River, who was passing the premises, saw the fire through the opening in the barn, and with the assistance of some neighbors, set about releasing the horses and cattle. In all, five horses cad several head of cat- tle were saved Everything else was de- stroyed Mr. Huvh-s estimates that his loss will be abou $1000. Lhe barn was lasured fur $200.

There are twenty constituencies in which nv Mercierite candidate has yet been nom- inatec, and the rout of the Count and his boodle brigade becomes more apparent as the fight does on.
The latest rumor is that Hon. Felix Marchand will be elected Leader of the Quebec Grits, or as many of them as are leit, after the night of the 8th of March.

Sxow.—Complaint is made that certain persons are in the habit of hauling snow out | of their yaris and depositing it in piles on some of the streets of the city. This is particularly the case on Prownal Street, near St. Joseph’s Convent. The police will likely attend to some of the offenders in a day or two.
Erections To-pay. —Seven by-elections take place to-day, as follows :— Peel, North Victoria, South Victoria, Kast Simcoe, East Bruce, Halifax and East Middlesex. Peel, East Bruce, North Victoria and East
engineers and the Greek seaman of the steamer Embiricos, which foundered last Friday night off St. Martin’s island. The other men from the steamer, supposed to have been lost, have arrived at Cardiff. The rescue of these survivors disposes of the murder part of the mutiny story. Chief Engineer K .owles, of the Embericos, who has arrived at Liverpool, denies the re- ported mutiny among the steamer’s crew before she foundered.

The Department of State has confirmed the report from London that Great Britain -nd the United States had agreed to invite France, Sweeden and Italy, each to designate the person to serve as 4 member of the tribunal to be selected to arbitrate the Behring Sea controversy. This tribu- aal will have seven membors, two repre- sevtng the United States, two Great Bricain, aud three the neutral governments.
Negotiations at Washington.
WasHineton, Feb, 11. Yesterday there was a preliminary ses- sion, during which the Canadian Ministers aad the United States Government repre- sentatives agreed upon the ground for the coming conference, which wili last several days. This series of negotiations is in- tended by the Canadian authorities as a preliminary interchange of views fur the purpose of ascertaining the nature of the subjects each side is willing to discuss, and the form the discussion will take.
Ottawa Notes.
Orrawa, Feb 11. James McLaren, the leading lumber king of the Octawa Valley, died yesterday after- noon. His estate is worth seven or eight millions of dollars.
The Supreme Court has dismissed the motions te quash tre North Perth and West Northumbeiland election appeal. They will, ther+fore, be heard next week.
The polling will take place in London, Ont., aud in Quebec West, on February the 26ch.
