Now, apparently feeling that only a sureessftil double heart finesse could produce the needed tricks. South led a heart toward dummy and put in the ten. Obviously, this was not n good idea, and the sla-m was lost.

lf South had simply observed that. West had started with seven diamonds and three spades. he would have realized that there was virtually no hope of finding the queen and jack of hearts in the West. hand! There was far more chance that at least twa of West's three unknown cards were clubs. laecuuse. of the comparatively few clubs in the North-South hands.

grew new ones. Several times he had seen Lightfoot. while the new Xintlers were growing. But he ‘IIOYCI’ had seen him without any. l either old or new. and he was cur- ious, very curious. to see how lLiziitfoot would lock with no ‘crown at all on his head.

Soon he saw Lightioot a short distance ahead. He was in a thick- ,er of small young; apple trees. He ‘was browsing on these. This means lthat he was eating the tips of the iyllllllf} and tender ttvigs with their tichtly wrapped lent buds 'I‘hese are one of his favorite foods in winter. .

He looked as ii he didn't. know how to hnld his head.
