PERISHED IN THE Storm —St. John, N.B., advices of the 21st are as follows: Mrs. Wil- cox, wife of Stephen Wilcex, a Loch Lomond farmner, was frozen to death on Thursday bight while going home from the city. A team met her about a mile and a half from home at 5 o'clock that afternoon. A fierce storm was then raging. Yesterday morning she was found dead iu her sleigh 150 yards from « house. It is beliewed she cut the horse loose hoping he would go home and an alarm would be ‘raised. Her hopes were in vain,-and she perished in the storm and dark- ness that fearful night. Mrs. jWilcox was about,60 years old.

Boston Markers.—From a circular of

the Boston Chamber of Commerce, dated Feb. 20, at hand this morning, we learn

that, while the potato trade has not been very brisk for the past week, there has been « steady, moderate demand and prices are ruling fully as firm as they were a week ago. Receipts of eggs have been light, with a good demand, and prices gradually advancing. The general condition of the fish trade has not changed to any great ex- tent during the past week, but an improve- ment is looked for during the Lenten sea- son. Mackerel are in fair demand, and are bringing full prices. Smelts are plenty, but very dull. >

Mr. B.D. Howatt, of Crapaud, has been contined to his house for two weeks with in flammation of the lungs, but he has so fer recovered as to be able to move out again.

DIE. Deeply regretted, at Pinette, Belfast, on the llth February, of inflammation of the lungs, Elizabeth, daughter of the late Donald Merrison of that place, aged 52 years.

Summary of Proceedings.

Orrawa, Feb. 24

In the House of Commons to-day— Sir John Macdonald, replying to Mr. Flynn, said that Mr. Tupper, Minister of Marine, had left Ottawa for Washinton to- day to represent Canada in the negotiations uow pending in respect to the fisheries and Behring Sea questions. No formal com- mission was issued to Mr. Tupper.

Mr. Foster refused to agree to Mr. Laurier’s motion calling for the correspon- dence in reference to the Atlantic mail service, stating that negotiations were still going on,

{n moving that grains and seeds smport- ed for use in the ensilage system of feeding stock be admitted free, Mr. McMillan (Huron) said that the Government, as patrons of young industries, should not re- fuse to encourage ensilage. He quoted resolutions passed by the Farmers Institutes iu Ontario asking for free corn. 2 Messrs. Armstrong aud Rowen supported the reso- lution,

Mr. Bowell said the matter had been considered by the Government and corn for ensilage could not be placed on the free list without a change in the tariff. It was impossib'e to say what varieties of corn would not ripen in Canada, The quality of corn imported for ensilage’ was too small to call for a change of Government policy and therefore he would oppuse the motion.

The House divided on the resolution, which was defeated by 84 to 59.

The House then adjourned.

The Worid’s Fair. WASHINGTON, Feb. 24.

The House of Representatives is voting this afternoon on the location of the World’s Fair. First vote : Chichago, 115; New York, 72; St. Louis, 61; Washington, 56; Cumberland Gap (Mr. Skinner, of North Carolina) 1. Second vote : Chicago, 121; New York, 78; St. Louis, 57; Wash- ington, 46. Third vote (official): Chicago, 127; New York, 92; St. Louis, 53; Wash- ington, 34. Whole number, 306; majority necessary, 154. The galleries were packed with spectators and the corridors were ub- structed by the crowds which gathered to witness the deciding struggle in selecting the location of the World’s Fair.

LATER.

On the eight ballot Chicago got the World’s Fair. The vote stood—Chicago, 157; New York, 107; St. Louis, 25; Wash- ington, 18; total 307; majority 154. This gave Chicago three more than the choice.

Fed A. Walton, the Pacitic Express Com- pany embezzler, is still in the police station, and service Detective Grose is not going to get’ him away as easily as he expected. Grose thought he would be allowed to return to Montreal with him this afternoon, but Walton has engaged Dr.. Alward, and propeses.to resist any and every attempt at being taken back. The warrant for Walton's arrest was issued in Montreai according to Grose, and he has not got it withShim. As it will not arrive until to- morrow afternoon nothing will be done in the meantime.

Amnesty Granted.

Paris, Feb, 24. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day a moting granting amnesty to all persons guilty of taking part in offences in connec- tion with the strikes during the past decade was passed.
