THERE was quite a “boom” in business at the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this fore- noon. A young woman charged with aband- oning her child was. sentenced to jail until the next session of the Supreme Court. The ‘‘eolored monstrosity” owned up to the charge of carrying 4 revolvor but denied that he did so for any deadly purpose. The re- volver was confiscated and the ‘* monstrosity discharged on condition that he get some- thing to work at. The case of the four men for assaulting a Lower Spring Park shop-keep- er was adjourned till to-morrow owing to the absence of the prosecutor. Two young men for being drunk and fighting on Pownal Street on Sunday night, 23rd, were each fined $30 or 30 days. A man for being drunk and out after hours was fined $15 or 10 days, and two common drunks were disposed of.

Acting Secretary Fairchild to-day sent | the following telegram instructing the Col- lector of Customs at Portland in regard to the Canadian schooner Sisters: ** Ou pay- jinent of this telegram and the expenses ‘arising from the detention of the vessel, you will not exact the fine incurred by the | Schooner Sister under a section of the Re- vised Statues.”

On Thursday the outposts in Cyprus Hills, in charge of Corporal Ritchie, dis- covered a band of American Indians camp- ed a few miles from the outposts. The Corporal and squad went to the Indians, asked their business, and were answered by a shower of bullets. The squad returned the fire, dropping one Indian.

What Capt. Doughty Says.

PorTLanp, Mer., May 30. Capt. Doughty and his crew arrived home yesterday. Capt. Doughty says that he was dviven into Englishtown by the ice, and would not have bought bait of the in- habitants had it not been brought out and offered for sale. He purchased ten barrels, and thought that if it was legal for the owners to sell, it was legal for him to buy. Believed to be Losi. Wotrsoro, N. H.; May 30. Rev. T. C. Jerome, Pastor of the Congre- gational Church of this village, in company with his two sons and one daughter, and a young man namel Theodore Davis, wert out on the lake for fishing yesterday. Then boat has been found bottom side up and it is believed all have been drowned.

A Missing Steamship.

Hauirax, May 30. A cable to the ‘* Herald” says that con- siderable anxiety is felt at St. John’s, Nfid., regarding the safety of the S. S. Siberian, which left Halifax a week ago for that port, en route for Liverpool.

A Black-Hearted Murder.

Provipvence, R. 1., May 30. This evening Fred and Jack Volker, brothers, were shot by a mulatto during a quarrel. Fred died, and the other brother lies at the hospital in a critical condition.

Shipwreck and Loss of Life.

A despatch from Australia reports the loss of the steamer Lyelmoon, from Mel- bourne for Sydney. Seventy persons were drowned.

Twenty Years’ Penitentiary. Haurrax, May 30. At Lunenburg, Saturday, Chief Justice McDonald sentenced a man to twenty years in the penitentiary for shooting at Nepeau Owen some time ago.

Cholera Spreading. Rome, May 30. There has been reported at Venice to- day thirty-two new cases of cholera and twelve deaths.
