Plagiarism _ and cheating at
When the Aims and Objectives Committee release their report this spring, it will be interesting to see if they make any comments on the question — are students_at the University to learn, or are they here simply'to get a degree?
It would be nice to say that all students are here to learn,but it just isn't the case. The majority of ‘ students put the majority of emphasis upon getting the degree.- _
Universities have always been aware of this fact and as a result have set up“ testing and-grading systems,

saying that students must be forced to learn. This testing system as it exists, tends ‘to alienate students even more from the process of learning.
The emphasis is moved from learning,to doing what is necessary in order to get a good grade(or pass).
What this has lead forth
to is a highly complex system
of cheating and plagiarism. The gbal becomes "beating the system" and,all methods are employed in order to do it. ’
It has gotten to a point , where it is right out in the open. The Cadre has been '

an example of plagiarism on a national level. Though do— ing it on such a scale is pnew,it has always occurred
on a smaller scale. There have always been cases of somebody writing papers
for other people,or using papers more than once.
Cheating on exams is almost
taken for granted. When you go in to take an exam,students will always be placed as far apart as possible because if they were given the chance

they would cheat. Not to me-- ntion other techniques such as having looked over all past exams from that same prof (in cases he uses the same questions); writing answers on your hand, looking at somebody elses paper,etc.
The main thing that we have learned is how to beat the system,instead of how to learn. This is going to continue until the emphasis is finally placed upon learning. ‘
People should go to the University because they want to learn. The University would be a place of learning where there were no exams, no grades,and no degrees. It would be interesting to see if people would go or not.
It would give us a chance
