The Fire Record.
The tire record for July shows no tendency to diminish the enormous total of losses that has been piling up since the year opened. Not since 1866,when the great Portland conflagration occurr- ed, has there been a July marked by so many disastrous fires. During the month there were 170 fires, whose re- ported destructiveness was from $10,- 000 upwards. Of these 170 tires there were seventy-nine where the reported loss was between $10,000 and $20,000 ; twenty-six between $20,000 and $30, 000; twenty-eight between $30,000 and $50,000; thirteen between $50,000 and $75,000; eleven between $75,000 and $100,000; six between $100,000 and $200,000; and seven between $200,000 and $700,000. In thissummary no fire of less than $10,000 loss is included. If we fairly estimate for unrecorded fires
and firesof less destructiveness than $10,000, the aggregate fire waste of
July may safely be put at $8,800,000 for the United States and Canada. Adding the figures of July to those of the pre- vious months of this year, we have $62,550,000 as the aggregate loss by fire since January 1 in the United States and Canada, which is an increase of nearly $10,000,000 over the correspond- ing seven months of 1883. dill either
