Art the Stipendiary Magistrates Court this morning William Norton, arrested on coim- plaint of his wife for habitualdrunkeuness and neglect. was sentenced to one month's im prisonisent with hard labor. Hector McPhail, a half-witted individual, appeared upon com- plaint of Mr Porter, charged with annoying Mr. P. continually. The Magistrate allowed the prisoner to be discharged upon the distinct understanding that he would be good in the future. Wim. Hennessy was yesterday further remanded, and wiil appear before the Stipen- diary to-morrow morning.

Mersorw.—A brilliant metoerie display similar to the one seen here a short time ago, was witnessed at Amherst on Thursday even- ing. The sky, which was overcast, was sud- denly so illuminated by the light of a meteor that a bright reflection was cast over objects as if a calcium light had shone upon them from a distance. Mrs. Sargent says when the present limited exodus of Chinese from San Francisco is accomplished by extra induce ments to be offered the Mongolians will swarm to New York. She intends, with the assist- ance of her friends, to see what can be done With manufacturers for the extensive employ- ment of Chinese workmen.

McCallum believed the country had turn- ed the corner. King decried the statements of Sir Leen- | ard, respecting New Brnnswick, and en-| leavored to show that St. Jehn city had| lost nearly her Whole trade, owing to the | vad effects of the National Policy. He averred that gentlemen in the House from New Brunswick, supporting the Govern- ment, found themselves humiliated, because of pledges they had given in the strength of Sir Leonard’s statements. He believed that if the census should be taken next year, the population of New Brunswick would be found to have decreased during the last ten years.

At the close of King’s speech, Domville tnoved the adjournment of the debate. — The House adjourned immediately after.

The Sportsman says that, although Parole has arrived at Lincoln, and betting on him is 40 to 1, it means nothing. He will probably not start in the race.

A Berlin déspatch says the Pope having made the concession that the names of the priests appointed to livings are henceforth to be officially communicated by the Bishops to the secular authorities. Peace between Berlin and the Vatican has become possible. About a thousand vacant livings will be re- filled, and some vexatious clauses of the ecclesiastical laws repealed.
