It was rather a nice cha— nge of pace to have some jazz being presented on the Island. The Paul Horn concert was excellent, but I must say I am rather bi- ased in my opinion, since, having gone to the jazz workshop I got a chance to talk to each of the membe ers of the quintet_and di- scuss with them different aspects of their music.

The ferry which the quin- tet was on was a bit late, so as sometimes happens, the workshop began a half an hour late. They wasted no time though in getting it going. It began with a short introduction by Paul Horn and his saying for anybody to ask any ques— tions they had about music whether it be technical or general. The crowd of abo— ut 150 people(mostly music student were carrying th- eir instruments with them) didn't ask any questions immediately so Horn spoke about a basic "blues" pro- gression and the quintet played some blues! After

which a whole group of qu-'

estions began. At first, the differences between jazz and blues was dis- _ cussed and then what muSi- cally distinguishes the *two. It soon drifted into different times used in music and how it was poss- ible for part of the quin- tet to be playing a diff- erent beat from the rest° They also discussed how the different members of the quintet were able to feel out what the others were playing and accomo- date their music to them. .(With each one of these ~concepts discussed the qu- intet would play a song or a musical progression to

The electric piano player, Ralph Dych, gave a sample of about thirty of the di- fferent sounds he could produce on the piano with his synthesizer. He has a large one but said it was too large to take on tour so he had made the small one himself and built it into a sewing machine box. After about two hours the large group broke up and; each of the members of the quintet got together with a group of people who were interested in finding out more about their particu- lar instrument.
