It was hoped that the government might have seen its way clear atthe last moment to put itself right in the matter of the steamship subsidies to Portland. But it appears that the line whose business it will be to turn the traffic from Canadian to New England ports is to bave nearly two thirds of all the subsidies granted for the transatlantic trade. On thelast day the goverament has come down with a reduc- tion of subsidies. But the line to suffer is not the one which received the most and

which does its whole winter business through a foreiga port. The Port- land subsidy is not touched. It is the

Beaver line that suffers. This is the strong-

service, Itis thelinethat gave Canada the first through winter trade it ever got. It isthe originator and pieueer in the wesiern export trade throngh St. John. The company owning the Beaver line took hold of the winter port business Jast year with an energy and courage which the peo- ple of St. John will not forget. Traffic was turned in this direction that would havegone to Portlani and Boston, and the way was broken for other lines tocome in aud share in the trade. Yet this company is the only one whose subsidy is reduced. The Port- land service with $126,000 a year is not disturbed. The saving of $5,000 could not be made out of that foreign service without a year and a half notice, but the St. John service, which wasas much an annual contract as the Allan’s, is reduced twenty percent. Thisis done not only without notice, but in the face of a notice our distinct promise that it would not be done. The members for Portland will be home this week from their worse than use- less sojourn in Ottawa and the people will probably talk to them about it.
