Heavy Tuunper.—On Sunday evening New Glasgow was visited by an exceedingly heavy thunderstorm. The lightning killed a cow belonging to Win. Bagnall, Esq. Other damage was done by it.

THE appearance of a team of oxen on our public streets to-day attracted much atten- tion. They were yoked in a very heavy sloven, and guided by the stinging charms of a heavy birch stick in the hands of an ancient yeoman.

On Sunday evening last the barn of My. Robert Ford, of New Glasgow Road, was struck by lightening. The straw that was in the barn took fire, but was extinguished before much damage was done. Mrs. Ford was in the barn at the time the lightening struck, and received such a shock that she remained insensible for hours.

DeatH oF ONE OF Rev. Howarp Spracur’s Cuimpren.—Rev. Howard Sprague is called to Charlottetown by the death of his son, which took place there yesterday afternvon. The bereaved parents have the sympathies of the com- munity in their affliction. Mr. Sprague has left the management of the lectures, to be delivered on this and to-morrow evenings, in behalf of Centenary Church, in com- petent hands, and his absence will not, he| wishes us to say, interfere with them in any respect.—St. John Tel. 13th.

THe members of the St. Patrick’s T. A. Society will hold their annual picnic at St. Dunstan’s College to-morrow. The com- mittee appointed by the society have spared no pains nor expense to make this the best picnic of the season. The programme of games and amusements is large and inter- esting, and will no doubt be carried through in a manner which will reflect much credit on the society. At ten o'clock a.m. the members will form in procession at St. Patrick’s Hall, where they will be joined by the St. Joseph’s T. A. Society, the Grand Division of Sons of Temperance and a number of temperance societies from the country districts in regalia. They will then march to the pleasant grounds of St. Dun- stan’s College, headed by the Rustico Brass Band, where they will, we hope, spend a most enjoyable time.

Earl Beaconsfield is expected to reach London on Tuesday afternoon. A great popular demonstration is expected at Char- ing Cross Station on his arrival.

A Constantinople special says : A great conspiracy agaist the Sultan has been dis- covered at Stamboul, and fifty arrests have been made, There is considerable excite- ment, and may high dignitaries are reported involved.

A despatch from Belfast says that a seri- ous riot occurred in Portedown, Ulster, be- tween Orangemen and Catholics, and the disturbance still continues.

Political correspondence says the Porte has instructed the authorities of Benjaluka to notify the population that the Austrian army will enter Bosnia with the most friendly intentions, and that the relations between Austria and the Porte continue} amicable.

The dedication of Hackett’s monument will not take place to-morrow. The matter has been referred to the Orangemen of On- tario, and if it is decided for a procession to be held, it will come off before the end of the present week.

A match between the two champion oars- men—Hanlan and Courtenay—has been arranged to take place at Owasco Lake on the 20th of September next for $5 000. The distance will be five miles.

TRADE in Montreal has been reduced to a very small volume indeed. There is never much business done at this season of the year, but during the past week the Orange agitation has added to the lethargy in whole- sale and retail trades.

A sap boating accident occurred at Halifax on Sunday last. As three young men, named William Townsend, son of Silas Townsend, and John Holloway, son of Thos. Holloway, and John Lomas, were pleasure sailing in the harbor, the boat upset, and Messrs. Townsend and Holloway were immediately drowned. Lomas was saved by holding on to the boat until rescued by the schooner Here, Lomas has since died from exhaust- ion.

Dr. Macponatp writes to a London paper: —'‘*The heat is so intense that great care should be taken to prevent sunstroke. We have already had early warnings. If out- door laborers would put fern or cabbage leaves inside their hats, or wind bands of rushes, vetches, or green herbage of some sort around them, there would be no cases of sunstroke. By this means the heat is stunned through herbaceous substances, and is much less oppressive.”

Ravaces or Dipurarerta.—The family of Philo Lyon, at Long Reach, King’s County, was visited with a sad afiliction last week by that terrible scourge, diphtheria. Within one week four children fell victims, begin- ning with the youngest and taking the next e'dest in turn. The dates and ages were as follows :—3d inst., Ada May, four years and four months ; 4th inst., Charles Leonard, six years and six months ; dSthinst., Arthur Wellesley, nine years and five months ; 12th inst., Deborah Davis, eleven years and five months. Mr. Lyon is thus bereft of his en- tire family of children.—-St. John Freeman.
