The S. U. General meeting was. held yester- day at Duffy. 'Jhis exer- cise is held semi—annual- ly durning both semesters. Traditd‘nally at these meeting tive “1&1 make pres-. entations noting their accomplishments.

It seats that in both last year and this year, a core group of ideal- istic, unrealistic, im- mature, negatively orientated self-acclaimed intellectuals, feel that they have file God given right to criticize any- thing and everything they deem fair

This group refered to numbers about five, with another half—dozen as— sociates who play a two faced role, adopting a left wing or a right wing . View, depending upon the situation.

At any rate I and the rest of the executive

ments. Sate of these (read the meeting report fomd elsewhere in this paper) were very notable, . in light of the fact that Kevin Gauthier and myself have been in of— fice only eight weeks. Also, we have not as yet been officially sworn in— to office.

After the executive presentations, there was a period of silence. It seemed that the audience was contented; that the executive , council and sub-committies were doing an acceptable job of taking care of S. U. business.

’ 'Jhen all hell broke lose. An inquiring student viewed the S.U. as a tremendously power- ful organization, which should concern itself with such as the resur- rection of mmrial Hall. Which would most likely necessitate a cutback in course funding. " Also, it was expressed that the executive should ‘ laund1 an inquiry into the finincial operations of the book store. In— cidently, any profits from that outfit are pooled into general funds whidn defray University

operating costs.

These agitators now seem to feel that the S.U. is respcnsible for the adminstraticn of U.P.E.I. (under radical advisement, .of course) .

This idea is in sharp contrast to that of last

This basically was the reason for the large turnout to’ the general meeting, held'ayear ago.

tive members had alreadyi « resigned. Last year's newspaper The Cadre, was printing such things as "It is not socially fashionable to be seen in public with the S.U. ex- ecutive members." And

"People who run for S.U. positions, solely for personal gain." My ooint is this, given past records, this year's

executive , Kevin Gauthier, John Neville, Mike Wm,

and Mike Kennedy, are dedicated to the student cause. look at our track record in the length of time we've each been in office.

Now it seems we are, being chastised by" a goup of agitators, for the way we adminstration governs U.P.E.I., and that the S.U. should make all decisions af- fecting U.P.E.I.

All I can say is this, I do feel that student reps in both Senate and Board of Governors are responsible and effective. Presently, that is the best we can do. As far as the small group of

a possible solution, your life here and hereafter would be much easier for you. 2) Why not run for an executive position next year, then maybe we can switch positions, I'll drive the tractor and you can stand behind the manure spreader.

This afternoon I was one of the 52 students present at the General Students Union Maeting. In my opinion the meeting was run very smooth— ly however not much inform- ation was presented that was not common lmowledge already.

The question period was a farce. The only issues dealt with were double occ— upancy in Marion Hall and the price of books in the bookstore. The Student Un- ion has very little say in these issues without the sup- port of the students. Con— sidering there were 150 students needed for a quo- rum at this meeting and on- ly 52 students showed up,

I think the chances of this are very slight. I continually see the same faces at each meeting and these people can on- ly do so much.
