Emiaravion.«—The etigration returns for the past month show an enormous increase from the Mersey, the total number of emigrants being 29,392, or 12,954 over the corresponding peried of jast year.

STRANGE I’reicur.—A quantity of live bees have been successfully conveyed from Palestine te Envland, and forwarded on to Canada by Messrs. Pitt and Scott, carriers, 44 St. Paul's churchyard, London. They were placed in a number of small boxes, peculiarly constructed, so that they could obtain food, air and water, and were let out and re-packed in England previous to their reshipment by the Allan mai) steamer ** Moravian. ”

OatHs IN ParwiaMent.—Mr. Tillet. M. P., for Norwich, will move on the 15th that it is not within the proper functions of of the House of Commons to enquire into or trouble itself about the religious opin- ions of any person elected to serve in Par- liament ; that it is a.reasonable presump- Yion that any person elected to serve in Parliament is loyal to the Crewn and Constitution; that any mémber speaking or acting disloyally outside of the House is obnoxious to the laws relating to treason and sedition ; that amy member speaking or acting disleyally within the House is amenable to the House, which has ample power to protect its own character and dig nity; and that there is, therefore, in the opinion of the House, no necessity for any oath or aflirmation on the occasion of, and asa preliminary to, a member taking his

seat.

Tne Car.—A return has just been issued of the number of persons in the army and navy who have been punished by tlogying for the ten years ending December 5lst, 1878. In 1869 21 soldiers were flogged, and in each sueceeding year the number in- creased until it reached 41 in 1879. In the navy: the reverse has been the case, in 1869 there being 61 men flogged, w! ~h number diminished each year until 1878, when only 8 men received the punishment. The high- est number of lashes awarded in any case was 48, and the lowest 8, which latter num- ber was only inflicted once, while the for- mer was adopted in the majority of cases.

Oxrorp ComMEMORATION.—Oxford com- moration took place on Wednesday. The under-graduates indulged in their customary noisy demonstrations before the concert in the Sheldonian Theatre, which preceeded the principal event of the day. The vice- chanceller, Dr. Evans, conferred the hon- vrary degree {upon several gentlemen, in- ciuding Lord Aberdare, Mr. Faweett, Sir R. Temple, Mr. Lister, the surgeon, Mr. Millais, and Mr. G. F. Watts. The Post- master-General was the mest pepular with the gallery.

Royal Favor Wanrep.—-On the 29th of August, 1822, the Queen, then a child, and called Princess Alexandrina, was riding through Kensington-gardens in a pony car- riage. As the vehicle was driven down the broad path by the water side, an immense retriever came bounding from the lake with a large stick held crosswise in its mouth, and running beneath the pony so frightened the animal that the carriage was overturned on to the. footway, and the Princess thrown out. Before, however, the weight of the carriage could come upen the child, a sol- disr who had been watcliing the party sprang forward, and seizing the Princess by dress, at the risk of being himself danger- ously injured by the falling chaise, swung her safely into his arms. Amongst the crowd which collected, a subscription, amounting to 18s., was madeup and hand- ed over to the brave fellow who had saved the future Queen of England from a terrible and agonizing death, and the peny being presently quieted and the carriage righted, the Princess and her attendants proceeded toward the palace, the man who had saved her life being told te follow them. This, with some difficulty, his thigh having been badly cut against the carriage step, he did, and arriving soon after in the ante-reom, he was presented with the magnificent sum of one guinea and the thanks of the Duch- ess of Kent fer saving her dear chud’s life, with a promise that something more sheuld be done for him. That man was John Maloney, a linesman in the 73rd Foot, and for four years he waited patiently for the ‘* something.” An accident disabling his wife, he wrote to the Duchess reminding her of her premise, and asking assiatauce on behalf of his injared helpmate. Three weeks later an answer came, stating that General Lord Harris would shortly be the bearer of a gift from the Duchess, and ten days afterwards John Malony was ordered into the presence of the General himself ‘‘ John Maloney,” said the General, ‘| feel great pleasure in ‘presenting you with £5, the gift of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, for your gallant and manly conduct in saving her dear child’s life on the 29th of August, 1822, in Ken- sington Gardens ; but you are to under- stand that this is an acyuittance, and you are not to make any further appeal to her Highness.” And an acquittance it was, for although Maloney falling il] and having left the 75rd, more than ene application was made, except a few shillings given him from the poor-box of the metropolitan polige-ceurts, not another penny has he received, and to-day, eighty years of age, in feeble health, with failing sight, and a wife as aged and infirm as himself, the man who saved the Queen’s life is depend- ent for his subsistence upon the charity of the streets, and an army pension of six- pence a day. The Power of Sinall Sums.

As illustrative of the proverb ‘ many mickles make a muckle,” the annual Satur- day Hospital collection made in the manu- factories of Birmingham, England, a few weeks ago, realized the handsome amount of $18,500. This collection was instituted about eight years ago by the working men, and has raised annually from $15,000 to S8H000, which is divided among the nu- mereus Hospitals of the town. This is ad- ditional to the ‘‘ Hospital Sunday” col- lection in all places of worship in that town and neighborhood, usually taken up during the month of Nevember, and which realizes from $20.000 to $25,000. As the various hospitals are carried on a non sectarian basis, all denominations unite in this ‘an- nual collection. This ‘*‘ Hospital Sunday ” has become au institution of the town, it being about twenty years since it was first inaugurated, and the principle has been adupted by a number of the larger towns of England, and even in far-off Australia some Birmingham men have succeeded in working up a sentiment in its favor.

It would appear from rumors which are in cireulation that the Dominion Govern- ment is seriously considering the project whereby they will be relieved of the cun- struction of the Canada Pacific Railway. ‘The immediate cause of these rumors is the fact that Sir Charles Tupper has secured his passage for England. Of course the object of his sudden visit is a subject of speculation, and rumor connects it with the Pacific Railway, and it is even said that Sir Alexander Galt has for some time been in communication with a company of English capitalists who are willing to un- dertake the construction of the Canada Pacific Railway on terms very advantageous to the Government. The advertisement for English navvies jfor the ruad, which has attracted so much attention here, is said to have been really in the interests of thiscompany. It is pointed oufin support of this theory that Sir Charles is going home to arrange the matter, that the chief engineer, Mr. Charles Schreiber, who sfart- ed out for the North West, was recalled, it is supposed, for the purpose of giving the necessary information to Sir Charles con- cerning the position of the read.

Mr. Bradlaugh addressed 10,000 persons at Northampton on Saturday, and spoke in London on Sunday. Various other meet- ings have been held in London and else- where in his favor.
