The Price of Cotton.

Tue lest Patriot contained a curious |

article on cotton. The editor of that | paper contends that cotton warp is thirty cents a bundle dearer than it was beiore | the National Policy was introduced. Sup- pose his contention is true—and we do | not believe it is true--what does it} prove? Will the /afriot contend that because oats were selling in Charlotte- town for twenty-eight ceats a bushel be- fore the National Policy was introduced, and are now worth forty-four cents, the increased price is due tothe N.P. It would be just as reasonable for him to do so in the one case as inthe other. Some cotton merchant lias evidently beeu stuffing the editor of the Patriot with nonsense. Here are his own words: ** Our readers can see how the consumer is fleeced in order to iacrease the profits of the cotton ring when he learns that the Dominion merchant can tc-day go to the Ucited States and buy equally good if not superior cotton warp to that manu- factured in the pampered factories of the Dominion, pay the «xorbiiant protective duty, and land the article here five per cent. cheaper than he can the home made article. A gentleman whose experience is extensive and whose veracity is beyond question tells us that this is the fact.”

To use a favorite phrase with the editor of the Patriot this is ** rot” of the worst kind. Does he expect his readers will believe that the intelligent merchants of this city, and other cities of the Domi- nion would buy from the Dominion manufacturer if they could get an equally good article from the States for a price five percent less? Why they do not import their cotton {rom the States and save the five per cent besides paying thirty cents a bundle into the Customs insiead of into the pockets of the cotton ring is a mystery to us.

promise. While in England he entered into negotiations with Mr. William

Cunard for the purchase of his splendid whart, and with the Admiralty for the purchase of a piece of land required.

We are most happy to congratulate Sir Charles upon his recovery, and upon his prompt action in this matter; and trust that he will now turn his attention to the establishment of efficient winter com- munication between this Island and the mainland as guaranteed by the Terms of Confederation.

Concerning Nuisances.

Toronto has an ** [Injunction case” ov the decision in which The Mail makes the following comment: “It is common learning that the iaw is strict and that the old bias agaiust mechanical industry prevails in our legal traditions still. The books are full of eases bearing on the question of nuisance, and judges have in the past leaned towards the strict interpretation of the precedents in favor of the protection of private pleasare. But of late, particularly since the establish- ment of extensiye railway systems, and since manufacturing industry has widely spread, the courts have taken a more liberal view of the question, aud have re- fused injunctions for alleged injuries caused by railways, and businesses es- tablished under legislative provisions. The question that agitates the mind of manufacturers is this-—are they to be open to constant petty persecution from people who may fancy themselves injured in person or property by the noise or emoke of a necessary, a valuable aad a great industry? The actual foundation of the wealth of the city consists largely of manufactures. This being the case, ii is obvious that the largest liberality should be exercised towards them in cases such a3 we are discussing. If the location of an established industry is to be disturbed because neighbouring resi- dents happen to have seusitive nerves or querulovs dispositions, then it is clear that industry is under an obvious disad- vantage. It is for this reason that we regret the suit, and regret the decision. We shall not cavil at the law laid down, but take the liberty of saying that possi- bly it may have been misinterpreted.”

The Monetary Times, commenting on the same case, says: ‘it would be a serious mistake tv so harass and worry manufacturers as to drive them from the places most suitable to their business. Unless some settlement of this case is made, it is likely to be carried turough all the Courts, with what result it is im- possible to predict, except that the whole subject is sure of being very iully ventil- lated and discussed.”

We may remark that it does not, in this case, appear that the plaintiff moved his house closer to the nuisance, or that the defeudant had used the premises as a manufactory for upwards of thirty years. In these respects the case in Toronto differs materially from tlie Aliey-Duche- min case.

THE SONCERT.

The cencert in the evening was well at- tended; and if mnsice had charma to render an andience insensible to the unsightly Market Hall and its surroundings, and if it were possible te reconcile the Ave Maria and the Quintette Club with Brannivan’s Band and the Znlus of the ‘‘ Carlottetown Amateur Minstrel Troup,” it might have proved a success. The ‘‘ Amateur Mius- trel’s”’ did their part in their way slmoet as well aa the musicians of the sams class who come here from abroad. Mr. Williams and Mr. Hermans both sang very well indeed. Mr. Worth’s cornet solo, with accompani- mont, was very fine; and other good pieces were urtisticly rendered. Yet the effect of the concert on the whole was not pleasing. The wixture of classie music and niggar minstrelsy was rather incongrueus. tO

Ar the Stipendiary Magistrates Court this fereneon Jen Riley, who was some time ago sent to the penitentiary for shop- lifting, appeared for being drunk and dis orderly, aud was fined $3.00 or fourteen days. This is the same individual who created much consternation in Pownai street yesterday and shook terror into the denizens ef the West Bog. Francia Nil son, charged with deserting from the brig Alpheta, was sentenced to eight weeks im- prisonment. Charles Henry was summon. ed for gelling liquor without license. The case was adjourned until Monday.

Races.—-At the race in Amherst yesterday, the three vear old class was well eontested Two colts by “‘ Harry Baker” won fires auc second money. Inu the handicap race Truro, Kitty Therne’s driver was thrown from the sulkey and received injuries which will probably terminate fatally. Mr. Wes cott’s horse Zulu, which started in the race with Kitty Thorne, did not take a prize.

A London despatch says that the debate in the House of Commons on Father Sheehy’s arrest continued till midnight, and revealed «a remarkable agreement smong varivus sestions of the Irish Liberal members in condemning the action of the Government, in refusing to give the canse | woich led to the arrest om reasonable sua picion.
