And so today we had fowl for dinner and firstlings of new po- tatoei. that with grand-daughter ‘z had fetched from our patch of them. pleasantly surprised to find them sizable and promising when we dug them from the warm earthy drills. It seems as though it was only the other day that the seed was planted and yet as we look back, it is to realize that much has taken place in tiis inter- val. James himself contributed the accompanying vegetable. a new turnip that with s sprinkling of sugar and salt did very well by our cooking, though it is only the frost that can sweeten these well. And for a relish, we made one oi the harvest apples, which shaken from the tree in the old orchard, one must quickly gather before one or another of the farmers’ sows that own it as a vacation ground, rush up to claim thesa as well.

We had apple sauce for dessert a confection which always brings hack to us, as we serve or enjoy it, memories of another table and orchard of the long ago. A brook stole in and out of that one, and the sunny bank of it was a magic place on a September day tn sam- ple firatlings of the rosy-checked Duchess apples, that grew in abundance there. And today, all at once it seemed when dinner was over, the machine went down the driveway, bearing the farmers, and Karolyn, back to their rounds and soon Jeanie was off with grand-daughter to her nap in the house across the lane.

And presently a grand-mother oi four came tn call-—one that, though she would be the last one to lay claim to it, is among the unsung heroes of iier rlme. When one has been left rnotherless in her tender years and must assume the care of a household. young dreams and hopes have small chance of being realized. One like this has little to say about her future as she is swept along in a tide that is not always fair to her. There are, of course. if one be not bit- ter at fate, the compensations. and in time with patience "our own will come to us." "My de- sire. as a child was to one day be able to travel-and to develop my musical inclinations -— but in- stead", she chuckled, "I had to take up nursing-my baby sister at first. later my own children - - - and now at times, my grand-chil- dren. hlcss them!"

But one felt that if she had suf- fered crosses and losses, it had been made up to her. and if he had been tried by tire with be- reavements, parents, husband, son. these had left a spirit undaunted. and a woman very sweet and fine.
