ANGRY YOUNG MEN

Sometimes we just have to vent our spleens at the world. So many little things really annoy the staff of the Panther Prints. This week we’ve decided to tell the world all our pet peeves. Brace yourselves.

We would like to point out that many of these things also annoy lots of other people on campus. This is be representative of us as students, not as journalists.

First, access to buildings. Security is usually great about most things, but they can be way too lax when it comes to letting people into buildings and offices. It isn’t hard to get into most buildings on campus at any time of day or night. We know of specific examples where people were allowed into labs, offices, and the Student Union building late at night. The people involved were not asked for identification. Many buildings and offices contain valu- able equipment that could easily be stolen. It really would not be so hard to ‘‘crea- tively borrow’’ some expensive computer hardware.

Next, the Pit. Sure, it is smoke-free (although with cold weather upon us there are rumours that the nicotine-dependent folks on campus will hold a smoke-in at the Pit to reclaim it), but there are problems with the food prices. Prices are not marked on most items, and the sign does not contain an accurate listing. This would not be so bad, except that the prices are not consistent. Would it be so hard to have a consistent list of prices? As well, almost everything available at the Pit is too expensive. For instance, a 250 ml carton of chocolate milk costs 59 cents at the bookstore. The same milk is 95 cents at the Pit. Can you say highway robbery?

Speaking of highways, what about the traffic light at the crosswalk? We have no problem with having the light there -- often there is no other way to get across the street. As well, if you are driving and trying to get onto University Avenue in heavy traffic, it can be very helpful if someone tries to cross the street. Having traffic stopped is sometimes the only way

to get into the flow of cars.

The problem is with the yellow light. It can be a long as ten seconds or as short as three. Stopping in time with only a three second warning before the light goes red can be rather difficult. Why isn’t that yellow light a consistent ten seconds?

On the subject of getting into and out of the university, there really should be an access from Mount Edward Road. True, the university doesn’t own the land be- tween campus and Mt. Edward Road, but a simple driveway connecting it with the campus border road would be a godsend. Waiting to turn left unto Belvedere Avenue can take a horribly long time during rush hour. Perhaps a deal could be worked out, since most the land really doesn’t appear to be used for very much.

How about signs on campus? Sign, sign, everywhere a sign. All those posters are an eyesore. What’s more, no one takes down out dated signs. Well, maintenance does, but there are always far too many signs for the janitorial staff to ever have a hope of catching up. There should be a by- law forcing everyone who puts up signs to take them down later. Here’s a hint for all of you people who enjoy causing visual pollution -- try using a little restraint.

Let’s talk about professors for a minute. Some profs always run class overtime a minute. That’s not too bad. Others tend to consistently go five or more minutes late. That can be a real nuisance. If you are in a class that runs late, and you have the misfortune of having another class immediately after, good luck getting to it on time. As well, if a class goes late it can delay the next class in the same room. On the other hand, some instructors start early. Why can’t classes start and end at the proper times? It would make our days less stressful.

Continuing about profs and classes, something really annoying are profs that hold tests outside of class time. Long tests. Tests are annoying already, but having one

We at the Prints do more than find fault with the world, however. Sometimes good things do happen. The Biology department was kind enough to grant permissions for us to borrow one of their vans to get to an upcoming conference. Unfortunately, no one here has the required class 4 driver’s licence to drive the van, but the Biology department is still nice.

Well, we’ve gotten something off our chests, and we feel much better now. True, this is not exactly a scholarly piece of writing, but let’s ignore that. Sometimes you just have to grab life by the lips and pull.
