NEW BRUNSWICK ELECTIONS,

We learn by the last Mail papers that the Elections m New Brunswick, as far as the accounts have been received, have resulted in favour of the Liberal Candi- dates, giving the advocates of real responsibility a triumphant majority; thus shewing that the people of New Brunswick have sense and spirit enough to dis- countenance the absurd and mischievous amalgamation of parties who had possession of the Government during the two or three yeare past—a counterpart of which was sought to be imposed upon this Island in March ast, when his Excellency and his prompters thought of buy- ing over the Liberal interest by the offer of three seats inthe:Executive Council. It is a significant fact, that since the recognition of the Responsible System by the Colonial Minister, General Elections have taken place ja all the British American Colonies, and that in all those elections the old campacts--some of whom held on tu office and emolument in Nova Scotia until. they were disgracefully dismissed—-have been most unmer- cifully thrashed. | Toryism is 2 “ gone case” in British America, and those fools who have clubbed their pounds and pence to provide oatmeal for Duncan Maclean, in the vain hope that he could roll back the tide of public opinion, might ss well have thrown their money into the Hillsborough for all the good it will produce. InP. E. Island, ten or twelve years ago, if Donkey were a stranger to the people, his gross falsehoods might be believed; but the fellow is now too well known, and the people are too well informed, to give effect to his weekly tirades. So long as Donkey fills the editorial chair of the Islander, gad acts as the willing slave of the Compact, the friends and advocates of Responsible Government need not give way to the slightest apprehensions for the ultimate triumph of their principles, their best safe-guard being in the character of their opponent, notorious as he is for the, abandonment of all honest principle, despised by the Country at large, and rejected with contempt by a con- stituency whom he had betrayed for the smiles of the Charlottetown Officials.

((7" Much astonishment is expressed, we are jn- formed, at the verdict, of Wilful Murder returned by the Jury in the case of the Queen vs. Beaton. We had no opportunity of hearing the evidence, and are conse- quently unable to pronounce an opinion upon the ver- diet; but the Jury appeared to bea very intelligent body of men, and, calm and unbiassed as they were, it is scarcely possible they would have returned any other verdict but such as their consciences and the evidence justified them in giving.

Anotaer Case or Sraspine.—It has been cur- rently reported about Charlettetown, during the Jast two days, that a man was stabbed at Georgetown a few days ago, while quarrelling with another person, and that death ensued almost immediately. We hope this teport may not prove to be true, or that it is exaggerated. Prince Edward Island is gaining notoriety too rapidly already forthe frequent occurrence of the crime of sabbing.

Great Fire in Monrreat.—Nearly two hundred houses were destroyed by fire in Montrea] on Saturday the 15th June. [t originated in a carpenter’s shop in Nazareth street. Many most valuable public and pri- vate buildings were consumed. In the consternation which prevailed at the time of the fire, many families lost the whole of their furniture. A respectable woman maimed Livingston was burned to death in endeavouring to secu’e her property, and another woman named Mc- Donald is reported to be missing.
