Drunken INprIans.—Notwithstanding the penalty of $200, to which persons furnish- ing Indians with intoxicating liquors are subject, we occassionally see drunken In- dians in the street. it is to be hoped that for the good of these poor people the law will be vigorously enforced.

In addition to the Islanders—noted yes- terday-—who attended the Drawing Room Reception held by the Governor General and the Prineess Louise, the following young gentlemen paid their respects at the Levee which was held the following day, viz :—George A. Ings, L. W. Watson, W.

Panwer, Ese.,Counsel for the defence in the McCarthy case, read in court on Tues- day, a, despatch from Daniel Stewart Mar- shal, of this city, which states :— i‘ slept at Waverley House on night of 12th October; was not in bed till nearly 2 o'clock. Saw McUarthy there; he treated before he left the house. 1 shipped next day in the ‘J. V. Troop” for Cardiff ; think my evidence would help prisoners. I only arrived last night. Heard nothing of the murder till then. If wanted, telegraph immediately.” This man Marshall called at our office this morning and informed us that he never telegraphed to Mr. Palmer regarding txe matter; that he return- ed from Shediac on Monday last; that he never shipped in a vessel called ‘‘J. V. Troop” and that on the 12th of October, 1877, he was in the employ of Messrs. Dodd & Rogers, in thiscity. Some one has evidently been hoaxing Mr. Palmer.

A Ber or Five Years Sranpine.—We are informed that five years ago, Mr. Thos. E. Smith, late Station Agent at Point du Chene, and Mr. Robert Moffatt, of Dal- housie, contracted a bet of $8, Mr. Smith betting that the next Governor General of this Dominion would be either in the person of the Marquis of Lorne, or some member of the Royal family. The money was de- posited with Mr. Wm. Weldon, of the Wel- don House, who was to pay interest on the deposit until the appointment of the present Governor-General, and then hand the prin- cipal and interest to the winner. This Mr. Weldon did last night in his hotel, now in Moncton, handing over $10 to Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith is certainly to be congratulated on his success as a supernatural prophet—in his line he beats Vennor as a weather prohet all hollow.—Monoton Times.

On Monday, the 25th inst., before four Justices Of the Peace at Montague Bridge, John J. McDonald, William Edmunds, William Coughlan and John McRae were convicted of selling liquor without license, andefined in the sum of $20 each and costs. The Advertiser says: ‘‘A short turn like this ‘should be a warning to others inclined to trample upon the law with impunity. Also, at Georgetown, on Saturday, the 25rd inst., before William Sanderson, Esq., Patrick Cluney and Mary Finn, both of Cardigan Bridge, were convicted of dealing out some of the ‘‘ardent’ without license, and fined in the sum of $20 each and costs —averaging six dollars each. This is the only method of ridding the country of such

Died.

In this city, on the 22nd inst., of [diptheria, Anna Maria, daughter of John and Mary Jane Good, aged 9 years.

And on the 29th inst., Sarah McKinnon, wife of John Good, and step-mother of the above mentioned child, of the same direful disease, aged 44 years. When her death was about to sever the soul from the body, she perceived it without dismay, and entrusted herself in the arms of Him who said; ‘‘Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” The funeral takes place on Saturday, at 2 o’clock, from her late residence, Grafton Street. Surely Mr. Good deserves the sympathy of the entire com- munity.
