Hawkesbury, Jan. 28—Schr. Ada R., of and from Charlottetown, laden with oats, for Europe, was driven ashore by the ice at Bear Island, Strait of Canso. She is likely to be- come a total wreck.

Loss or Anotner P. E. Istanp Vesse1.— Barque ‘‘ Ganger Rolf,” Lepsoe, from New York for Newcastle, arrived at St. Michael's, on the 21st ult., ina leaky con- dition and with part of her cargo jettisoned. The ‘‘ Ganger Rolf” brought the crew of the British barque ‘“Hertha,” Capt. A. | Bride, from New York, Dec. 8, for Hon- fleur, which vessel was abandoned. The ‘“Hertha” was built at Summerside P. E. L., in 1874, registered 584 tons, and hailed from Charlottetown. She was owned by the Hon. J. C. Pope.

To the Editor of the Examiner:

Dear Sir,—Through the medium of the Widle-awake EXAMINER, permit me to hold up to the view of that part of the inhabitants of this Island who lay claim to one particle of humanity (to say nothing of Christianity), while we look at the law of imprisonment tor debt. Wherever we go in this world we find, of necessity, two classes, viz., debtor and cred- itor. Without doubt it is necessary there should be a law to regulate such a condition of things. In order that the law shall answer the euds of justice, we must take into consid- eration a fact which cannot be denied. With- eut exception, banking institutions, private bankers, traders of all classes and farmers, in their daily transactions, (without the hope to gain) take upon themselves a voluntary risk. Does the existing law recognize this fact? Look into that loathsome institution on Pow nal Square forthe answer. See those unfor- tunate ones, who have been over-persuaded by the creditor class to accept goods or other transferrable property, giving their promise to pay ata future time. through the failures that have become so frequent, many an honest man finds himself unable to meet his liabilities. Under the present law such an one is thrown into jail; his property sold at auction for very much less than its value; his family turned out of doors, and the means whereby to earn an honest living utterly denied him. Will a continuation of this condition of things remedy the evil?

Now, that the law makers of the land will soon be in session, would it not be advisable to insist upon their enacting such a law as will give both debtor and creditor an equa, chance? So that neither can be the tyrant But insure the creditor, and p'ace the debtor where he can pay his debt. The Canadian law, or the law of the New England States, known as the Trustee Law, has answered the desired end for both parties in the settlement of all debts for years. Now, what has proved satisfactory in those places is certainly worthy of consideration on P. E. Island.

As there will be a change in the Govern- ment in a short time, we hope the new broon. will sweep all the remains of barbarism off the Statute Books, and in their stead enact wholesome laws, suited to the altered condi- tion of the times in which we are now living.
