Robert J. Burdette announced some time avo that he prop wed to deliver a new lecture, and the prospect of some- thing new to lauge at drew a crowd that filled Chickering hall. After a complimeatto the Baptist home, in whose aid the lecture was given, Mr. Burdette announced as his text, “Seest thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before kings,” and added. ote first, dear brethern,the text speaks of a man, and not a woman, who is not oaly diligentin her own, but in every- body else’s business, thereby destroying theetiect. If a man is diligent, he may not get Cleveland’s place in 1888, but he may not wantit. (Laughter.) He may wear bis old clothes until his new ones are paid for, he may love his neighbor even as his neighbor loveth himself; he may never be evea a con- gressmap, and certainly not as assemblyman, but that don’t prevent him sitting at the table of kings. But he will bs happy all the same He will be a Christian too, for there can no more be a lazy Christian than a fat skeleton. But there is one thing more. Be diligent ia your own business. Take my advice and persons! warniog. If you are diligent in other people's busi- bess you will never sit before kings but rather before a police court. (Laughter and applause.)

Blood and Horrors.

Curious how one’s feelings get blunt- ed by the sight of blood and horrors,’ Says Sir Charles Wilson, in his new narrative of the Nile expedition. “There was one strange incident. An unwounded Arab, armed with a spear, jamped up and charged an oflicer. The officer grasped the spear with his left hand, and with his right ran bis sword through the Arab’s body; und there for a few seconds they stood, the officer being unable to to withdraw his sword until 2 man ian up and shot the Arab. Old Privileges.

According to the “old privileges” the Protestant Church was regarded in the three Baltic Provinces of Russia as an Established Chureh. But as the Czar hus undertaken to Russianize the Protestant-German population of those Provinces, the Holy Synod of Russia has issued a ukase declaring that hence- forth the Orthodox Church shall be the only Established Church for all the Czar’s subjects of all religious beliefs ; aod therefore all the children born of the mixed marriages between Protest- ant and Orthodox parties shall be con- sidered as Orthodox.

Dogs doomed to die in London do not suffer half as much as men who pay the ex'reme penalty.
