Manners cannot be put ip books; they must be ac- quired at home or at school from cultured fererunners, whose own manners are good, and who are, moreover, #omewhat insiat- ent on having those who follow them well- mannered also. The best manners are naually inherited. Yet there are remark- able exceptions, where very perfect gentle- men come at least of very humble imme- diate extraction, whatever their remoter ancestry may have been. Good aurround- ings in the formative years are the most important factor in the making of the best manners, as well as of the best speech. At present our manners are growing woree; our schoolboys, and receat schoolboys, are in many cases intolerable, not because they are bad, but because they know nothing of good manners.—Montreal Witness.
