Capt Dunhaus received from Corn. McKeever, of the United States’ Navy, commanding the Congress frigate, l5,000 fathoms of this lino, I0,0tl0 on one reel and 5000 on another. The plummet weighed 9 lbs., was II inches long. and I-701 of an inch in diameter. When 7,706fathoms had run olfthe reel, the sea bottom was reached. The plummet was drawn up several times 50 Iathoms; and after it had renewed its descent, it stopped abruptly at the original mark to a fathom and would not take another turn olI'the reel. The whole time taken by the plummet in descending to this amazing depth, 7.7 geo- raphical miles of 60 to a degree, was 9 ours minutes and 45 seconds. The highest utunmits of the Himalaya are little more than %,000 feet, or 4.7 geographical miles above the sea The sea bottom has therefore depths greatly exceeding the ele- vation ofthe highest pinnacle above its sur- ce. at care was taken to show the nature of the bottom, but in reeling in, the liuebroke at I40 fathoms below the water line, carrying away a thermometer which had been attached to it at 3,000 fathorns. This sounding is the deepest that has ever been made on 'any previous occasion.

A Fae-r roit Fiasrcas.—Dr. R. T. Bald- win haa made public the result of several yours investigation and experiments upon manures, and vai-ions ways of fertilizing the sci . He states that the best and speediest way to fertilize any soil, is to cover it over with straw, bushes, or any raw material, so astocoutpletely shade it. The surface ofthe earth thus being made cool, dark, dump and close, soon undergoes a chemical process like putrefactiori, and becomes highly ferti- lisetl. This plan of fertilizing, he says, may be applied with success to any soil whatever, no matter how poor, and the result will be astonishing.
