The October meeting of High- fieid United Women's Association was held on the evening oi Oct- obcr Z6 at the home of Mrs. A. W. Campbell. The devotional period led by Mrs. Ralph Gav. evened with lhc hymn “Near The Cross," followed by the members repeat- ing The Lord's Praiyer in unison. The lender then mad a study of hm; prayer. which gave s clear and detailed explanation of each or! the sses.

The business period opened with the roll call and the minutes of the last meeting. The friend- ship secretary stated that she had sent a sympathy card, and‘ two notes of thanks were received by the society’. The treasurer report- ed having paid the light bill of $1.51 for the church. A ulnmittee emulating of lVLrs. Gay and Mrs. Frizzoli, was appointed to arrange s, sacred concert to be held in the near future. The final] plans for holding a cake sale are to be dis- cllaaod next nlonth.

Mrs. Frizzeli invited the mem- bers to her home for the annual nlsetlng on Novfiiil, when she end Ml's. Stanley Hum-y will be on tfhe lundh commit/toe. alter their meals with the seasons: st first they rob the nests of smaller birds, then turn to grass- hoppers and beetles, and finally take weed seeds, wild fruit. and grain. if these hold out, Crows are late in leaving us.

Certain birds are here all win- ter if they can obtain the kind of meals they want. Southern 0n- tarlo has a great attraction for the gay little Goldfinches. because there they can find their staple diet of weed seeds, and some wild fruit. Sunflower seeds are a special treat for them. Cedar Wax- wings have a great propensity for eating fruit. Flickers prefer ants to anything else, but. can subsist on fruit, grain. and mast. All these species linger in other parts of southern Canada also while sufficient food remains. Even one of our Warblers. the Myrtle. oc- casionally persists until December. and herein lies the secret: it can substitute berries for its regular fare of insects. It helps to have diversified tastes.

Some of the Ducks. notably the Golden-eyes, are among the last birds to leave Canada—if they go at all. This depends entirely upon whether or not open water on our large lakes and rivers allows them to find nourishment. Herring Gulls hang around the large clocks un- tll shipping ends because of the refuse they are able to pick up. individuals among several species as a rule migratory are sometimes loathe to leave, and may be seen long after their relatives have flown. _

MI. JOHN McQ UILLAN

The community of New Haven lost one of its most favorably known and respected citizens when Mr. John McQulllsn passed away in the Charlottetown Hospital on October 15, 1949,

Mr. McQuillan was born In New Haven and spent all his life on the homestead farm. He was s lie- voted member of St, Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Lot 65.

The funeral, which was larxt-iy attended, was held from the home of his nephew, Mr. Eugene Mc- Quillan, Elmwood, to his parish church on Monday, the 17th. Re- quiem High Mass was celebrated by his pastor, Rev. George Mc- Cormack, who also conducted the services at the grave in the church cemetery.

The pail bearers were his neph- ews, Linus, Aneas, Gavin, Eug- ene, Raymond McQuiilan and Bert- ram Clarkin.

He leaves to mourn his four bro- thers and six sisters. Katherine. Mrs. P. C. Trainer, Charlottetown. Owen of Elmwood, Mary, Mrs. J. Gabelman, Loretta, Mrs. Nelson, Margaret, Mrs, R. Shanks, Anne. Mrs. C. Pfromm, all of Akron. Ohio, U.S.A., James and Patrick of Boston, Mesa, Bertha, Mrs. V. J. Leonard, Charlottetown and Joseph on the old homestead, New Haven.
